Beauty disruptor Madison Reed turned dyeing gray hair into serious green during the pandemic. The seven-year-old company reported record revenue in 2020, more than $100 million, and just secured $50 million more in funding.
The New York Times included Madison Reed on their list of "Beauty Products That Got Us Through 2020." In a year when so many began to D.I.Y. their beauty routines, so glad we were there with our Radiant Hair Color Kits to make one thing -- the "reckoning with your roots" -- a little easier
Amy Errett, the founder and CEO of hair-color brand Madison Reed, transformed nearly 100 behind-the-chair employees into an army of customer service pros, tasked with handling the unprecedented volume of calls flooding the company’s phone lines. She also worked with partners in Italy to convert half of the company’s operations to making hand sanitizer — right when society needed it most.
“Back when I was in banking, and not all that many years out of business school, I was put in charge of managing lots of people, most of them older and far more tenured than I was. At first, there was distrust — but I knew winning their trust and respect would change everything. It did, and productivity soared. Everyone wants to be seen; people want to feel purpose. It was a lesson that forever changed how I think about things. Invest in people and the extraordinary will happen.” — Amy Errett, Founder and CEO of Madison Reed, an at-home hair care and color brand

Madison Reed has been more fortunate than others with the pandemic, joining a short list of winners that includes select other DTC brands, and essential retailers like Walmart and Target. Where others have been faced with a liquidity crunch, Madison Reed has found surging sales and the appropriate time to launch a new product. But it's hard to separate that success from the pain it's caused thousands of others across the U.S. "I'd trade the pandemic not happening any day," Errett said, despite all of the growth it's brought. "In this moment of massive anxiety for most people, massive fear, massive amounts of 'When is life going to come back again' ? I just want us to be a respite to help you feel and look good."
