A second chance at life—that’s the gift Lydia Fernandez gave her best friend, Paula Schneider, forever changing the meaning of their friendship. After years of living with ulcerative colitis, Paula was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare disease that gradually damages the liver and can ultimately require a transplant. As her condition progressed, doctors told her a transplant wasn’t a matter of if, but when. Years earlier, Lydia had made a promise: if Paula ever needed an organ, she would help. In 2022, she kept that promise, becoming a living liver donor and changing the course of Paula’s life. Living liver donation is uniquely possible because the liver can regenerate, allowing both the donor and the recipient to go on with healthy, functioning livers. “At any particular time in the United States, there can be between 12 and 16,000 people waiting for liver transplants,” says Dr. Adam Griesemer, surgical director of our Living Donor Liver Transplant Program, who performed Lydia’s surgery. “Living donation is now more important than ever.” Today, thanks to Lydia’s gift and the care of the team at the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, both women are thriving. "It took Lydia, my family, my wonderful doctors at NYU Langone, and a whole community to get me through this process," Paula says. "I wouldn't be here without them." Leaders from across clinical transplantation, research, industry, government, patients, and families gathered at NYU Langone Health for the 2nd Richard Slayman Clinical Xenotransplantation Meeting. Led by Dr. Robert Montgomery and Dr. Macey Levan of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, the meeting brought together patients, care partners, donor families, clinicians, scientists, regulators, and innovators to discuss the future of clinical xenotransplantation and the work still ahead. We were honored to welcome representatives from the NIH and FDA, whose participation reflects the importance of continued collaboration across science, medicine, policy, and patient communities. Named in honor of Richard Slayman, the first living recipient of a kidney xenograft, the meeting served as a reminder that meaningful progress happens when patients and families are active partners in innovation. Thank you to everyone who joined us for two days of thoughtful discussion, shared learning, and a collective commitment to expanding what is possible in transplantation.

As part of its comprehensive strategy to expand access to the highest-quality care across Long Island, NYU Langone Health today announced plans to build a world-class, state-of-the-art academic medical center in Melville, near the border of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The new campus will include a modern hospital with more than 500 private inpatient rooms, more than 70 emergency department bays, and advanced operating and procedure suites with the latest diagnostic imaging capabilities. Reflecting NYU Langone’s integrated approach to healthcare, the site will also include the tuition-free NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and space to conduct leading scientific research. A significant ambulatory footprint around the new campus will further enhance access to comprehensive outpatient care. The multiyear project is subject to extensive state and local approvals. Mental health challenges aren’t limited to adults. They’re more common in children and teens than many parents realize, and recognizing the signs early can make a meaningful difference. Dr. Aaron Reliford, clinical director of the Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, shares the behavioral and emotional changes families should pay attention to and how our center delivers evidence-based, family-centered care tailored to each child. “We all know mental health is highly stigmatized,” Dr. Reliford says. “If we can think about it as biological illness, it will help us be able to break through and engage with treatment providers, so that our kids can grow up and develop and just be kids.” Watch the full video to learn more about mental health challenges in children and teens, and click the link below to explore the support available through the Child Study Center ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gBWtumPj
