On Thursday, construction workers at Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center topped off a four-story tower project. On Tuesday, Northern Nevada Medical Center became the first hospital in the nation to perform a clinical trial for macular degeneration, the leading cause of adult blindness. Dr. Arshad Khanani implanted an encapsulated device into a patient's eye developed by Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, which contains protein cells designed specifically to stop the progression of the disease. With this treatment patients would no longer require shots directly into the eye; rather, the implant would continuously release these cells.
