What inspires our employees to donate to the Employee Giving Campaign? “I chose to give because I feel strongly about the charitable care services we provide. It's an honor to do this work and despite its challenges at times, I still look at it as a calling to help others. Giving in this small way can be meaningful for someone else. Acute Care is such a valuable service to many individuals. We reach out and form relationships with so many and I believe in our teamwork and know that together we genuinely help those who are isolated, vulnerable, in crisis, and need care. I just believe in all of us and what we give....it really counts.”

From the five boroughs of New York City to Nassau and Westchester, VNSNY employees gathered on October 25th celebrate VNSNY’s 125th anniversary. These breakfast events unfolded at 13 different sites across VNSNY’s service area at exactly the same time. Surrounded by balloons and other festive birthday decorations, staff members enjoyed a Continental breakfast, signed VNSNY banners to be placed in time capsules at Columbia University until VNSNY’s bicentennial in 2093, and viewed a special 125th anniversary video. Everyone also received take-home gifts to commemorate the occasion, including branded VNSNY umbrellas and chocolates with 125th Anniversary greetings on the wrapper.

Andria Castellanos has joined VNSNY as the Executive Vice President and Chief of Provider Services. In this role, she will oversee VNSNY Home Care, VNSNY Hospice and Palliative Care, Partners in Care, Community Mental Health Services, as well as Population Health and Business Development. Andria's extensive background in clinical operations and strategic planning within the hospital business provides her with a deep insight of what VNSNY’s patients and customers—which include acute care providers, nursing homes and insurance companies—need in terms of services. Andria shared her thoughts on joining the organization, "VNSNY has an amazing, talented team of people who are incredibly knowledgeable in their fields. I’m privileged and excited to be working with all of them, and I look forward to meeting these challenges together."

On November 1st, following a group count-down, President and CEO Marki Flannery and Board Chair John Rafferty officially cut the ribbon on VNSNY’s new 220 East 42nd Street office. “This very same building was once the home of the Daily Planet newspaper in the Superman movies,” stated Marki, in her address to board members, employees and consultants from outside partners who gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I think that’s very appropriate, because our move into this location would not have been possible without the amazing efforts of our own group of Supermen and Superwomen!” Kudos to the firms who made this new space a beautiful reality for us: Cushman & Wakefield, Gensler, Colliers International, JT Magen, JFK&M, Novo Interior Design, Interior Move Consultants, Empire Office Furniture and to SL Green Realty and the Grand Central Partnership for welcoming us into the building and the neighborhood.

Meet VNSNY Occupational Therapist Benito Flores, "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year" representing the Bronx region. Before Benito came to VNSNY 18 years ago, he worked as an occupational therapist in nursing homes, hospitals and rehab facilities. After speaking with a VNSNY clinician, he realized home care is the optimum setting for OT. “You’re working with and helping patients in their home environment.” Benito has worked in the Bronx during his nearly two decades with VNSNY. “I’ve always had wonderful managers and a very caring team,” he says. He takes a holistic approach to his work. “It’s not just about the therapy—it’s also about any other issues that are going on,” Benito notes. If he feels that a patient has additional needs beyond OT, he’ll share his recommendations with a nurse, social worker, or other team member. His award nomination included many accolades - “Benito is that OT that we have come to depend on for any special need at any time. VNSNY is a better place because of Benito!” We are proud to recognize Benito for receiving this award. Congratulations!
