As we celebrate our 125th anniversary, we remain committed to Lillian Wald’s mission to deliver home- and community-based care to our most at-risk neighbors – the chronically ill, the frail elderly, children, the poor, the underinsured and the uninsured. In many cases, we provide this care regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. Last year, VNSNY, together with our generous staff, donors, and community partners, provided over $47 million in charitable care and community benefit programs, improving the lives of tens of thousands of New Yorkers. We asked employee donors to share their "reason for giving." Here are two responses: From Hany Abdelaal, "The programs that are funded by the organization have such a great impact on people's lives and future generations!" From Jon Kearney, "I give to support VNSNY's Hospice Veterans Program and the outstanding work of Joe Vitti and Sun Yoon. They go above and beyond to support those who have served."

The kick-off event for the 2018-19 VNSNY ACE (Achieving a Culture of Excellence) Leadership Program was held on October 17. This a highly selective, 6-month leadership development program is aimed at identifying and developing VNSNY's future leaders. The 28 participants, who are the program’s ninth cohort, were joined at the event by over 40 senior leaders, ACE alumni and the participants’ supervisors. President and CEO Marki Flannery, SVP and Chief Human Resources Officer Marian Haas, and VP of Talent Management & Organizational Development Andrew Wise each addressed the audience, explaining the program’s role in developing and refining leadership skills, and encouraging the group to take full advantage of the opportunity for growth that ACE presents. Later in the day, the participants visited the Henry Street Settlement on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Like VNSNY, the Settlement is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding by Lillian Wald. The group viewed Henry Street’s special anniversary historical exhibit and took the opportunity to gather for a special group photo

The 2018 campaign has already raised over $40,000 towards the goal of $65,000 thanks to employee donations and fundraising efforts. A Product Manager for VNSNY CHOICE SelectHealth showed her colleagues practical tools and templates to get more organized. Participants left better equipped to manage their open projects, initiatives and operations. We're excited to continue these peer-facilitated learning sessions and to see where our employees' passions and expertise take us next!

Meet VNSNY Occupational Therapist Malky Strassfeld, "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year" representing the Brooklyn region. Since starting with VNSNY in 2012, occupational therapist Malky Strassfeld has excelled in every area - providing dedicated and compassionate care to her patients while also doing an outstanding job of coordinating her own efforts with those of her interdisciplinary care team members in the Brooklyn region. In her nomination for this award, it was noted, "Malky always goes above and beyond for her patients. She is extremly caring, very knowledgeable, and very dedicated to the mission of VNSNY. She shows initiative and delivers exceptional patient care. We should recognize Malky's commitment to the work she does!" We are proud to recognize Malky for receiving this award. Congratulations!
Meet VNSNY Physical Therapist Michael DiStefano "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year" representing the Staten Island region. Next February will be his 20th year as a physical therapist with VNSNY. He’s worked in Staten Island for that entire time. “I was born here, raised here, and now I’m providing home care here. Home-based PT is the one area where you’re really one on one with the patient. You need to have an excellent bedside manner and respect for your patients, because you’re coming into their environment.” His award nomination noted, “Michael is held in high regard by his patients. Both his clinical and interpersonal skills are used to obtain the best results.” One key to his effectiveness, says Michael, is understanding “everybody is different. You have to customize your work to that person. The patient wants to get better, and I’m there to help them. You can tell I love what I do. It’s a job I wouldn’t change!” We are proud to share this recognition. Congratulations, Michael!
Meet VNSNY Physical Therapist, Nataliya Kukil, chosen as "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year" representing the Westchester Region. Nataliya, who joined VNSNY through its new graduates program, just reached her seven-year anniversary with the organization. She began her career in home care and finds patients in their home environment open up to their rehab therapist in ways they often don’t to their doctor or even other family members. “Working in a home care setting, you get to see patients improve significantly in a relatively short period of time and regain the ability to do functional things that are important to them.” And adds this insight, “you have to be flexible, and you have to be compassionate.” Her award nomination noted, “Aside from being an excellent clinician, Nataliya is also a team player. She is always willing to help out—even when it means going out of her normal area to assist when needed." That feeling is echoed by Nataliya, “We have a great team—everyone really supports each other.” We are proud to share this recognition. Congratulations, Nataliya!
Meet one of the seven "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year" winners Justin Chilesky, Coordinator of Physical Therapy Services, Manhattan Justin became the first therapist to work for VNSNY straight out of graduate school. "Fortunately, I was provided with both great guidance and training in the field from the program’s clinical advisor.” He has worked in Manhattan ever since. “What I love about my work is seeing my patients advance themselves in their recovery." His nominating letters noted his “unwavering kindness, expertise and patience bring extremely positive response from patients, who exhibit a strong motivation in their therapy regimen after meeting him.” As Coordinator of Physical Therapy Services for his branch, Justin also supervises the practice of a physical therapy assistant making sure she has a full case load, providing the initial patient evaluations and plans of care, and then discussing her cases with her. Meet Violleta Fuzaylov, Speech Language Pathologist, Acute Care, Queens one of seven rehab therapists recently chosen for the distinction of being "VNSNY Rehab Therapist of the Year." Violleta has been with VNSNY for more than eight years. Her nomination included many accolades including, “Violleta completes her daily tasks with ease and top-notch delivery of quality care to our adult and pediatric population." "We are fortunate to have such a wonderful clinician providing services to our team. She informs, teaches, trains, educates, and improves our patients’ lives, and extends her craft to assist the clinical team, family members, and caregivers!” In addition to practicing her SLP skills, Violleta also contributes to the overall spirit and care delivery, “Violleta takes the time to remind the clinical team of the significance and contribution that SLP provides in home health. This supports and streamlines our vision as a home care agency. Her efforts to ensure that our patients receive quality care!” We are proud to share this recognition. Congratulations, Violleta!
Seven VNSNY Rehab Therapists were recently chosen for the distinction of "Rehab Therapist of the Year." They represent each of VNSNY Home Care’s seven regions and exemplify the outstanding work done by all of VNSNY’s physical, occupational and speech therapists and therapist assistants. Jennifer McCaffrey, Occupational Therapist Acute Care, Nassau Jennifer “Jenn” McCaffrey has worked in VNSNY Home Care’s Nassau region for nearly a decade. “I really like doing therapy in clients’ homes because you’re in their environment, working with them and their caregivers day-to-day,” she says. Her nominating letter praised Jenn for being “compassionate, pleasant and knowledgeable,” and “an asset to the VNSNY organization.” Her nomination also noted “patient care is Jennifer’s priority, and she’s willing to travel outside her designated area to make sure patients receive service and to assist her fellow team members. But her greatest pleasure is seeing patients improve. We are proud to share this recognition. Congratulations, Jenn!
