As we continue to recognize Social Work Month, the social workers on the Supportive & Palliative Care team are a vital part of our interdisciplinary team. Our Palliative Care social workers are highly skilled and talented individuals. They approach every patient and family interaction with a listening ear as they work to explore and clarify what is most important for people when they are faced with serious illness. Over the last two exceptional years, our Palliative Care social workers have put patients first and have learned new skills and processes, all in the interest of caring for our community like family. We are deeply grateful for their commitment to patients and families here at VMC.

Thank You for Bee-ing Amazing! The BEE Award celebrates and honors the exceptional skills and compassion given by our non-nursing staff every day. It stands for Being Exceptional Everyday and acknowledges the strength behind teamwork--because a DAISY can't survive without a BEE and a BEE can't survive without a DAISY. Mohamed Aden, PCA/HCA, 1B and Malynn Fain, PCA/HCA, Float Pool.

While Senior Hospitalist Medical Director Shahina Banthanavasi, MD, has been essential to Valley's efforts in responding to the pandemic through frontline delivery of patient care, her leadership in other areas has been remarkable. Most notably, as new pathways and protocols were developed over the past two years, she has organized and aligned teams to put these practices into action. Patients and staff all appreciate Dr. Banthanavasi's outstanding clinical care, servant leader approach to her team and her remarkable ability to collaborate. Universally beloved and a champion for high quality, safe, efficient, compassionate patient care, Dr. Banthanavasi is a wonderful physician leader who truly demonstrates "Caring for Community like Family." Congratulations to Dr. Banthanavasi for being selected as our Leader of the Quarter!

Community Generosity Makes the World Brighter for Our Patients and Families During the Holidays The holidays were a little bit brighter for some Valley families this year, thanks to some extremely generous donations from our community! On Dec. 22, kids in our Children's Therapy program got to pick out some pretty cool presents, thanks to Fort Lewis WA Toys For Tots! Overheard at our toy giveaway: children saying "Best day ever!" "Best day of my life!" and "My dreams came true!" Sgt. Steve Aguilar of Toys for Tots says, "After 5 years of volunteering for Toys for Tots and as father of 2 boys, nothing brings me more joy and satisfaction than witnessing the excitement kids get when they get their toy. This year's partnership with Valley Medical Center further reinforced the importance of Marines serving their communities by bringing joy to kids during a tough period in their lives. I look forward to this being an annual partnership." We are so grateful to the U.S. Marine Corps at Fort Lewis—and judging by the smiles on these kiddos' faces, they were too!

Congratulations to Wilma Doctor, a PCA on 3E and one of Valley's December 2021 Heroes! See what her teammates have to say: "Wilma is an excellent PCA who goes above and beyond to make patients feel comfortable during their stay. She's very caring, calm, and gentle when providing care. She does her rounds and makes sure patients' requests and needs are taken care of before she leaves. She's a great team player, always helping her coworkers no matter how busy she is. We are lucky to have such a great person working on our unit." "Wilma's contributions would be described in a Double Jeopardy column called "Potpourri." It's a little bit of everything. She's infinitely reliable, you can always count on her to be at work on time and ready to give it her all (seriously, she's more reliable than an atomic clock). Wilma is incredibly effective; she has fully mastered the PCA/HCA job here at VMC and is a role model for her peers. Wilma treats every patient with supreme respect and kindness, they often report during rounds that she feels like an old family friend.
