Demonstrating Valley's ongoing commitment to remarkable stroke care for our community, Valley has yet again achieved the American Heart and Stroke Association's Get With The GuidelinesĀ® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, its highest, most difficult to achieve honor. The award recognizes Valley's dedication to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. "Stroke care is a team sport, and we have a great team here at Valley," says Stroke Center Medical Director, Michael Previti, MD. "Our door-to-treatment times are low and have been improving every year for five years! We can now treat large vessel occlusions around the clock, and continue to work hard to ensure up-to-date, best practice care for our community."

Valley Earns an A Grade from the Leapfrog Safety Group This spring, Valley earned an A Grade in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, placing us in the nation's top third of hospitals for patient safety and quality. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization which collects, analyzes, and publishes hospital data on safety, quality and resource use. The grade uses 28 measures including rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, and whether hospitals have systems in place to prevent them. Measures reported by the federal government via the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, measures reported on the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and data from other supplemental sources are also used. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. The Safety Grades are based on a peer-reviewed methodology, calculated by top patient safety experts and are 100 percent transparent and free to the public.

When eight 7 South nurses attended a fall prevention conference last year, they learned about another hospital's innovative way to reduce falls, a Patient Safety Tree. What's Patient Safety Tree? Mounted on a wall as a visual for all staff, patient and families, the staff adds a bird or butterfly cutout to the tree sign every day without a patient fall. Should a patient fall, all the cutouts are removed, leaving a bare tree. They actively began adding the birds and butterflies to visually represent days without a fall beginning January 1, 2019. As of May 10, the tree has blossomed with zero falls!

Valley Medical Center is on the national radar for environmental excellence as the recent recipient of Practice Greenhealth's 2019 Partner Recognition Award at the Environmental Excellence Award Gala. Sustainability Committee co-chairs Kim Miller, Director Environmental Services and Jeremy Wyatt, Manager Perioperative Services accepted the award at the gala. "We learned that we're leaps and bounds ahead of many hospitals, but of course there's still so much to improve," they say. "With the combined energy and commitment of our Valley employees, we're shooting to rank in the Top 25 for environmental excellence nationally." The health of our environment directly correlates to the health of our community," says Jeremy. "Improving our sustainability efforts one plastic bag and bottle at a time fully sync with Valley's mission of caring for our community."
