Congratulations to Jamie Phillips, a Physical Therapist in our Covington Lifestyle Medicine Clinic and one of our March 2024 Employees of the Month! See what her colleagues had to say: "Jamie is a stellar example of a clinician providing Lifestyle Medicine! She is able to have meaningful and impactful interactions with her patients resulting in their successful engagement and initiative around building healthy lifestyle behaviors. Jamie is fulfilling the Caregiver Commitment by taking ownership of her patients' success, seeing the "big picture" of her patients' overall health (not JUST the reason they might have initially sought out PT), practicing an innovative and non-traditional care model and fostering a collaborative environment for the best possible patient care. We are lucky to have Jamie on our team!" "Jamie is absolutely deserving of this award. She goes above and beyond in her role at Lifestyle Medicine Covington. She serves as a strategic leader in the department, a role that has her innovating and testing new and better ways to implement Lifestyle Medicine in physical therapy. She has tons of energy and is GREAT at her job!"

March is National Nutrition Month! In honor of National Nutrition Month, we asked a couple of our Registered Dietitians some questions about themselves and their field. Read some of their great answers and get to know our team better! Q. Why did you become a dietitian? A. I have always been fascinated with using food to treat or manage health conditions. I also knew that I wanted to help people, so becoming a dietitian has allowed me to do that through food. Q. What can working with a dietitian do for me? A. Working with a dietitian can help you change your eating habits, create a sustainable healthy lifestyle and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Our visits take on so many directions depending upon what's most wanted by each person. Most my patients say that they were surprised at how much better they feel after making reasonable changes to their lifestyle habits. They usually state improved energy, increased hope, increased satisfaction with food and less cravings as unexpected benefits of working with me, alongside the expected benefits of lower cholesterol, less inflammation, lower blood sugar and desired weight changes. Q. Who should see a dietitian? A. Anyone can benefit from seeing a dietitian! Common reasons people come to see us are for weight management, diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

National Patient Safety Awareness Week 2024 is March 10 -16 This year's theme for National Patient Safety Awareness week is 'Safer Together.' Here at Valley Medical Center, safety is our core value. "From March 10 - 16 we are emphasizing the importance of safety among the entire team, from the care providers to our support staff to our patients and their families. The focus on safe care is a top priority, all the time," said Dr. Shahina Banthanavasi, Chief Medical Officer. "To work effectively, we must provide care in a kind and collaborative environment where all of us use universal strategies like communicating clearly, paying attention to detail, having a questioning attitude, speaking up for safety, and operating as a team to be Safer Together." There are five universal behaviors for high reliability that we can all do that prevent errors: Communicate clearly. Pay attention to the details. Have a questioning attitude. Operate as a team. Speak up for safety.

Congratulations to Maria Robinson, a Registered Nurse in our Pediatrics / Mother Baby department and one of our February 2024 Employees of the Month! See what her colleagues had to say: "Maria is so much fun to work with. She is great with her families and patients. She is so good at explaining procedures and teaching. She communicates well with staff and doctors. She is always willing to help out other nurses even when she has a busy assignment. She forms rapport quickly with her patients and they love her. She is all around awesome! She helps with IV's and lab draws; she helps make her patients feel welcome by orienting them to the unit, showing them where to get drinks and snacks, making the sleeper sofa, answering call lights quickly, feeding the babies so the parents can sleep, going above and beyond with a smile." Happy Lunar New Year! Lunar New Year, often referred to as Spring Festival or Chinese New Year, is the beginning of the lunar calendar year. It is celebrated by various Asian countries, regions and cultures with different traditions and customs. This year, it falls on Feb. 10, kicking off the 15-day Spring Festival. About the Lunar Calendar: Today, much of the world follows the Gregorian calendar, which is based on the solar year. The solar year is 365 days, which is the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun. In contrast to the solar calendar, the lunar calendar follows the phases of the moon, which as you might guess is how long it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth. The phases of the lunar month begin with a new moon when the moon is directly in-between the Sun and Earth. As they days go by, the moon moves around the Earth (“waxes”) and appears crescent shaped in the sky, until it reaches the other side of our planet and becomes full in mid-month. Now Earth is between the Sun and Moon. Finally, the Moon completes its orbit (“wanes”), until it is once again new, between the Sun and Earth.
