In national aspect, CSHL provide relatively generous salary but still expensive area. You can receive 401K when you accomplish two years, 403b before that. Good health insurance, vacation package although not many people use it in full.

Cost of health care plan capped at 5% of cost. Really comprehensive and with low deductables. Dental and vision also available.

The health insurance is great, almost everything is covered. The worst thing is no 401k

Amazing Health / Dental and Vision when I was employed! Co-pays of $20 for everything, no deductible. This may be different now. Also 401K was only an option after working for 2 full years. The only downside is vacation. When you work in a lab you don't get to actually use your vacation days. It was very frowned upon. And you need to plan them around your work, not the other way around.

Graduate students are not paid on a W-2 and are not eligible for any retirement benefits, but I believe all actual employees do have these benefits.

Health insurance options are expensive for graduate students and post-docs. They should be subsidized.

When I first started a number of years ago the health benefits were a better bang for your buck. Overtime employee contributions began to grow and our options began to decrease as well. Less benefits for more cost. Not highly desireable.

Even though employee contributions went up a lot this year for health care, they went up from hardly anything.
