I applied online via e-mail without any concrete connections, so I really didn't expect a response. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. They got back to me in about a month, we had a phone interview, then I went for an in-person interview a week later. Two staff attorneys and a paralegal were present. The phone interview was a way to review my credentials/resume and the in-person interview was a way to get to know ME. They were interested in my passions and opinions and background and ambitions. Go out of your way to study their current projects, cases, and blog posts. They want to hire people that live and breathe civil liberties, the kind of person that has "mass incarceration" as a google alert. The questions were VERY specific, so prepare accordingly. Also, make sure to have at least 4 post-interview questions that are GREAT and can spark a conversation. If you're actually passionate about the position and not just applying for the ACLU's name, the interview will be very easy.

"Why law?" As in, why the field of law. I was taken a back at first because up until that point they were only asking specific questions and this one was so broad and a bit vague.

Was a straightforward process and the interviews went well. Only con is that I never heard back after several rounds of interview, even with follow ups. I think typically, after several rounds of interview, it’s standard to send an email if the candidate does not get the position rather than ghosting.

There was a screener interview with the deputy director over zoom that was less than 30 minutes, an hour long panel interview with the director, deputy, some staff attorneys and previous paralegals, a skills test, and a reference check.

What are some ways you stay organized when managing multiple tasks and deadlines?
I had a lovely phone screen and completed a skills test shortly after. I was then invited to interview, but I never went through with it because I had a competing offer that was attractive. I had a deadline to respond to the offer and asked the team if they could interview me sooner than scheduled so I could weigh both options. They said no.
