Our take-home technical challenge is used by the hiring team to get a sense of candidates' engineering problem-solving skills outside of an interview setting. We set a time restriction to ensure that candidates spend a reasonable amount of time working through the questions. Our typical Mechanical Engineering Intern interview process for Boston-based interns is a little different than the one you've described - we start with a short video interview with a member of the hiring team (not a recruiter) to review your engineering portfolio.
