      Senior User Experience Designer Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Webdam (San Mateo, CA) in Jun 2016

      Interview

The process was comprehensive and thorough but ultimately a smooth ride and easier than most other companies I applied to. It began with 2-3 phone screens (with super friendly HR, VP of Product, designer, front end), then there was on-site interview day (3-4 interviews with a panel of staff for a brainstorming session), then there was a "at home" design challenge which was quite reasonable, and another on-site interview presenting the challenge. the phone screens were what you'd expect, generally going through my history, skills, and got some explanations on the company and their needs. Then I was invited to an on-site day - yay! The on-site day was rather intensive, with back to back meetings with product team members: PM, Designer, VP of Product (would be my direct manager) - they showed me the product and asked me specific questions on how do I think I would approach this and that. Half way through the day there was a design challenge (more like a brainstorming session with everybody) - the room had like 5-6 people sitting and listening to me, definitely the most stressful aspect of the day. I also got to meet one of the co-founders for a bit - he did ask me a lot of technical questions on how do I work with developers. After the interview day I got a home design challenge. I do feared this would come - a lot of companies feel easy on sending out ridiculous amounts of work (especially after the long interview day), but WebDAM's test was reasonable. I was tasked to solve an aspect of their product - mostly UX but at least one screen needed to be with full high fidelity design. Overall, it took me 4-5 hours to do, but I do work rather fast - I presented around 15-20 screens with animated interactions and a presentation (the sidebar panel I designed was high fidelity in all screens). After sending the challenge, they invite you to another day at the office (short one, 2 hours) to present my solution and thought process. I got an offer and started a visa process, which I was grateful they did! some tips: Be prepared to answer technical questions, know how product teams usually work and how you can fit within them. and dont stress with the brainstorming challenge! just wing it and be yourself
