Pros

I enjoy my time here, yet I recognize no place is perfect. Everyone leaves at 4 or 4:30 pm daily. The mission is in motion because the most recent progress report shows a downward trend for cancer rates. They have a party off site during the holiday season. You can see that a lot of planning goes into it. This week we are having an employee appreciation celebration. Looking forward to it. Recently announced that the office space will be renovated. Excited to see what the new space will feature. Has a mom and pop feel with a focus on scaling up. A lot of exciting things going on.

Cons

The organization could move a bit faster.

Pros

The AACR membership is a compassionate, dedicated and talented group of professionals focused on finding preventions, effective treatments and cures for cancer.

Cons

The AACR is headed by a CEO that has lost focus on the mission of the AACR. She often favors those who appear to respect her in person but are incredibly disrespectful of her in private. Something that I’ve witnessed too often. While the CEO is a woman, there is an undeniable atmosphere of sexism. Sadly, there is a certain level of racism as well. I’ve worked for and with other nonprofit organizations. I have never seen a nonprofit with this level of unprofessionalism and lack of empathy. Even while partnering with other nonprofits, associations and organizations, behind the scenes, unprofessional and virulent comments are made about partners, organizations and colleagues.

Pros

While I understand that every organization faces its share of criticism, my personal experience with the American Association for Cancer Research has been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve found the team here to be dedicated, supportive, and genuinely invested in both their team members and the organization's mission. I enjoy waking up every day knowing that what I'm doing is contributing to the greater good. For example, the leadership is always open to feedback and actively seeks ways to improve processes and employee satisfaction. The organization is in growth mode and scheduled to hire 20-30 new employees in 2026. I'm going to miss it.

Cons

Of course, no workplace is perfect, and everyone thinks that the grass is greener elsewhere, but I’ve consistently seen that those who work hard and don't just put in the minimum effort are rewarded with advancement. The CEO is an example of this, having started as an Editorial Assistant, attended school to expand her education, worked her way up the organization ladder, and has been running the organization for some time. Not surprisingly, those in the organization who are negative and the ones who put in the minimal effort and never progress.
