Limited Growth Opportunities

Pros

Pleasant people - great work life balance. Exposure to many facets of the advertising industry.

Cons

Limited opportunities for growth from the junior level - senior and mid level management are comfortable in their roles and going nowhere. Some portions of mid level and senior management are cliquey to a fault. Major strategic decisions are outsourced to consultants with limited input from the boots on the ground. Lots of lip service paid to culture improvements by senior management but transparency is limited.

Pros

- staff that is genuinely dedicated to their mission - huge growth opportunity for those early in their careers; the access to outside companies, talent and projects is unmatched - supportive community and environment, with people you are proud to call coworkers and enjoy spending time with (especially in DC)

Cons

- typically, promotions only occur when a slot is opened up as opposed to merit-based. This isn't because talent isn't acknowledged, but has more to do with their structure. That said, leadership does make an effort to reward talent in other ways, with continuing education, thought leadership, public speaking opportunities, etc.

Pros

The people and support at the Ad Council is amazing. They are making great strides to a better work life balance along with diversity and inclusion.

Cons

The work load can be heavy at times, but most managers are willing to work with you to help prioritize your flow. My main concern was the different managerial expectations. You may work with 4-5 different managers that all have different ways of running the campaign. That can cause a bit of tension at times, especially for those who have extremely high expectations.
