Pros

Um.... um.... um... yeah I've got nothing

Cons

Let's start with the fact that I worked for Adams Publishing. They bought a hometown, 100+ year old paper that had an 85% market share. Last I heard, it is around 10%. We had a guaranteed commission - that stopped. We had a 12% 401k match - that stopped. They removed the management from the building during their (hostile) takeover in order to offer promotions to "friends" who have been with them in other markets for who knows how long. They ignore seniority and hire people off the street who former management repeatedly turned down due to lack of qualifications. All in all this is a poorly run company. They are unfortunately purchasing papers in order to take all of the money they can before either selling them or closing them. They are a hedge fund who have no knowledge of the industry nor do they care.

Pros

After 20 years, you get 6 weeks vacation.

Cons

No raises No promotions Upper management never around. Owners are leeches feeding off a dying industry with no care or compassion for the employees. Health insurance is a joke.

Pros

If you’re desperate to get your first journalism job this place will hire you. They pay so little and have such low standards you won’t have any competition with other talent. But there are better first jobs out there.

Cons

Some of the lowest salaries/worst benefits in the business. Corporate is a nightmare to work with. Local management is OK, but don’t expect any feedback on your work. You’ll just be a body churning out copy. It felt like I was writing a community newsletter half the time. No commitment to real journalism. No raises. You’re only reward for doing good work is a pay cut. They cut everyone’s salary by 25% using the excuse of the pandemic. They then bumped us up to a 12.5% pay cut and that appears to be permanent. Just an awful place to work. Don’t do it if you can avoid it. Mgmt seems to be scratching their heads when reporters don’t stay longer than a year or two. Terrible pay and toxic work culture are the answer. Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
