if they hire you, its probably because they like your current work or expertise, so they will want you to continue working on that, appears to be pretty self directed, which is nice if that's what you want. all ph.d.'s where i was, smart people all around. open to collaboration, i often see people going to another's cube to talk out something they were working on.

Cons

im not sure of the compensation levels for full time hire's (i was intern) but i suspect that it is lower than business sector. this could be off base though.

Pros

One of the last few places where basic research is performed outside of academia. Management gives a lot of freedom to employees to pursue their interests.

Cons

Lots of beaurocracy, paperwork, and unrelated training. Managers are often not trained to handle personnel issues (they are scientists who moved up in the ranks) and this can lead to a lot of interpersonal issues.

There are many opportunities for growth both professionally and in education. There is also an opportunity to work with national experts to solve Air Force problems.

Cons

The work atmosphere is not great. There are rules about rules about rules, and it seems like many people in administrative jobs make processes arbitrarily that everyone has to follow.
