Toxic system and feelings in hiring

Pros

Young and potential platform to grow. Supportive and smart peers and colleagues to cooperate.

Cons

Poor management and leadership: The hiring system inside the company was really toxic especially the CEO and the founder micro-manage the hiring. Almost every offer needs to be approved by the founder even junior level positions, which means that even you delivered the proposed offer to candidates orally, there's high probability that the offer will fail in the approval process because of a lot of ridiculous reasons (not strong profile or education background even thought the candidate has passed all interview rounds). As a recruiter inside, I also delivered several calls to candidates that failed in the offer approval process. I personally tried everything to influence, but most time it's a fail. I don't understand why the hiring process would be so toxic like that. I think the founder and the CEO really don't care about the talents so they acted like they are emperors who have the power to say 'no' to those who have come through interviews. They also don't show the respect to recruiters cause they take the efforts from recruiters for granted. Apparently they enjoy the power they own. However, I still want to say that company branding and culture are conveyed by these details and the feelings from talents and employees. Everyone has their judgement internally and we shall see.

Thank you for sharing this detailed feedback and your positive comments about our platform and colleagues. It’s disheartening to hear about your experience with our hiring process. The situation you described does not reflect the respectful and fair environment we are committed to building. Our senior leadership remains deeply involved in hiring because we care about getting it right. Having a high bar for talent is important to us. However, you're correct that in our earlier days, this sometimes lengthened the process. We've since evolved significantly. We now have clear role-based approval structures that empower our recruiting team to act with confidence. Most importantly, we've implemented firm guardrails—all approvals must be completed before any verbal offer is extended—ensuring a smooth, transparent, and respectful experience for both candidates and recruiters. We're committed to maintaining our high standards while treating every candidate and team member with the respect they deserve. Your honesty helps us continue improving.

You're just a number

Pros

Working with incredibly talented people, solving real world problems

Cons

I want to make it very clear - to the CEO, you are just a number. You do not matter. Your voice does not matter. CEO cares more about AI than employees and every headcount request has to be justified as to why AI cannot do the job. Additionally - CEO just set a new company policy that every employee is REQUIRED to post about the company on their personal social media pages at least once a month. He has made this a requirement in performance reviews, which feels highly illegal/unethical I would highly encourage you to reconsider an offer with Airwallex.

Thank you for taking the time to share your candid feedback, we truly appreciate it. We understand your concerns about our social media guidelines and want to be clear: posting on social media as a brand ambassador is encouraged, not mandatory, and it won't negatively impact performance reviews. At Airwallex, we aim to celebrate our wins, share our perspectives, and make an impact. Our goal is to recognise what we're building and empower those who are excited to champion our brand. We also hear you on the importance of feeling valued. It's essential to us that every voice at Airwallex matters. That’s why we’re committed to creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels heard. We conduct engagement surveys twice a year to ensure we’re continuously improving based on employee feedback. If you’re open to it, we encourage you to continue this conversation directly with your People Partner or manager so we can better understand and address your specific concerns. Thanks again for your feedback.

Pros

Compensation is decent. That’s genuinely the only upside.

Cons

This place was one of the most draining and disappointing professional experiences I’ve had. If you’re considering Airwallex because it looks “fast-growing” or “ambitious,” look deeper. - Marketing leadership is completely clueless. There is an insane amount of money being burned on campaigns that add absolutely nothing to brand recognition, prestige, or credibility. It’s all word-salad messaging, vague “vision,” and flashy decks that go nowhere. Big egos, little substance. Lots of talking, very little impact. - Leadership loves to posture like they know what they’re doing, but decisions feel reactive, poorly thought out, and driven by optics instead of strategy. The culture is passive-aggressive and ego-driven so as a result people protect themselves, throw others under the bus, and pretend everything is “exciting” while teams burn out. - There is no real diversity here. The lack of inclusion is obvious the moment you walk in, and there’s little effort to change that. Different perspectives aren’t encouraged. Instead, they’re ignored or shut down. - Turnover is constant. It’s a revolving door. People come in hopeful and leave exhausted. During my time there, we lost so many great colleagues, talented, thoughtful people who either resigned quickly or were pushed out because of poor management and a toxic environment. At some point it stops being a coincidence and starts being a pattern. - The hiring process itself should have been a warning sign: long, disorganized, repetitive, and frankly not worth the effort in the end. Interviews drag on forever with unclear expectations, inconsistent feedback, and zero respect for candidates’ time. Let me assure you: that chaos doesn’t magically disappear once you’re hired. It is the culture. - Work gets framed as “high performance,” but it’s really just chaos paired with unrealistic expectations and little support. There’s no culture here unless you consider toxicity, ego, and burnout a culture. Yes, the pay is okay, but it’s not dramatically better than other tech companies in the Bay Area that actually know how to build teams, brands, and sustainable growth. The money isn’t worth the mental toll or the hit to your CV from pouring your energy into something with no clear direction. If you can, run. Save your mental health, save your confidence and save your career momentum.

Thank you for your feedback. We don't take reviews like this lightly, and we want to address what you've raised honestly. On leadership and strategy: we hear you. As we've scaled, we've made real changes — structured planning cycles, cascaded OKRs, and purpose-built manager and individual contributor development programs. These aren't cosmetic. They exist because we recognized the need for more clarity and better people leadership, and we're committed to getting that right. We're continually investing in building a more inclusive environment where different perspectives are not just welcomed but expected. If we fell short of that during your time here, that's on us. We've made meaningful improvements to our hiring process, including clearer expectations, more structured interviews, and faster timelines. Retention is something we track closely and take seriously. We're proud of the rates of promotion and opportunities for our team members to grow their careers here. High performance and sustainability are not opposites. We monitor team health through biannual engagement surveys, and we hold managers accountable for building environments where people can perform at a high level without burning out. Some of what you've described reflects real challenges of a fast-scaling global company. Some of it points to experiences that shouldn't have happened. Both are worth hearing. We wish you well, and we appreciate you taking the time to share this.
