Cons

-A recent aggressive pivot from a "people culture" to a "performance culture" is sending a rift through the company. Turnover is extremely high at the moment, though that is not unusual as turnover has been trending upward in recent years. -Women in management and leadership positions have been disproportionately forced out with the new CEO coming onboard - Nepotistic preference was given for a majority of leadership hires. In the case of HR specifically, this unfortunately creates a conflict of interest where HR does not protect employees from the company, but rather quite the opposite. -Internal career paths are non-existent compared to previous years. All hires are external currently. Expect to get in the door, but don’t expect to rise up. -People are treated as expendable. Any employee who is unhappy or is considering leaving is happily shown the door. There is no attempt to save them or at least take their feedback to improve. There is an exit survey all employees take upon departure, however it is an echo chamber (an antithesis of the principles the company is built on, honestly). -There are a number of ethical issues with HR writing fraudulent Glassdoor reviews to help boost the company’s ratings- certainly easier than improving a company’s culture overnight but definitely petty. -Wages are significantly below industry standards (check fair pay resources thoroughly before accepting any offers) -Competency standards for some positions seem to be lowering. Several entry level candidates with no prior B2B experience were hired recently and somehow outrank long tenured employees. -While the referral bonuses are generous, they have to be generous to incentivize employees to endorse their connections. Applicants that are referred are not treated with respect, recruitment often ghosts referrals entirely. - Community outreach has entirely halted under the current CEO. Employees previously were encouraged and supported in taking part in community efforts- bike to work day, creek clean up days, way to grow foundation etc. The current CEO doesn’t appear to see value in community involvement which unfortunately speaks to the priorities and values of the company pretty accurately.

Top-Down Mess

Pros

There are some really kind, genuine individual contributors.

Cons

Decisions are all made by a few people at the top of the organization. All decisions must run by them and approved by them to move forward. Often, great ideas are overlooked or shot down because the CEO or some other senior leader didn't think of them. Some recent positive reviews mentioned that the company moves fast and that anyone submitting a negative review may just not be able to keep up. This could not be further from the truth. Moving quickly in the right direction is great. Unfortunately, leadership and middle management often ask employees to run straight at a brick wall in the name of moving fast. It is maddening to warn management, "this approach won't work for x, y, and z reasons" just to be overruled, forced to move forward with the half-thought out idea, and then for the project to fail. It's demoralizing, and it's caused the company to lose a lot of very smart, motivated, and dedicated employees. Lastly, the culture is atrocious. Leadership regularly demean employees in meetings. The leadership team is small-minded and views diversity as unimportant and employees as widgets to do their bidding. I would NOT recommend this company to anyone who wants an intellectual challenge or an environment of respect.

Pros

Always paid on time. Free coffee and sodas.

Cons

This company has two problems, which doesn't sound so bad until you realize what they are. Problem 1: Technology For a technology company, they sure put all of the positive emphasis on Sales and Marketing. Somehow the C-level executives and the company owners forgot the thing they are selling is software. Just about everything in the SAAS environment is out of date/out of warranty/no longer supported. Even the latest PHP upgrade is for PHP 7 which reaches EOL this year. This will continue until the company is sold, loses all the customers or by some miracle, all managers in technology up to executive level are replaced by someone with experience and knowledge about how technology actually works. This was once a fine product. Problem 2: Management The CEO is more hands on technology than the CTO. CEO worked for Accenture so they fancy themselves to be technical gurus. Either way, none of the C-level types have a clue about how to run a technology company. Especially a SAAS company. Maybe their management philosophy would have been somewhat useful back in the day where stores sold software inside of a box. The executives do not trust you if you are not a manager. So naturally they place all of their trust in other managers who have no technology experience other than VMS and other outdated systems. Sure, some of them have a few online certifications but that kind of knowledge only skims the first few atoms of the surface. Everything else requires actual experience and education. The CTO has been hands off. She is busy pinky promising things she can't deliver. She will try to make you think she understands technology as well but as soon as you say "CIDR" or "Polymorphism" her eyes glaze over and ends the meeting. Management does not care about employee retention. This is proven by them firing anyone who speaks the truth about how broken the environment really is. I have seen a number of reviews on this site that say how great this company is. These are most likely fake reviews. The last bastion of a fraudulent company is one that tells you how great their "culture" is. Culture is not something you mandate in a company handbook. It is something that grows organically over time with the right people doing work they enjoy. If this company really had that great culture (it did many years ago) ask yourself this question...Why are so many employees leaving? And they are not just leaving but they are leaving without having another job. They are so desperate to get out of this miasmic work environment they have to go, sometimes months without a paycheck. Leaving was the only way to retain sanity. It probably sounds like I have an axe to grind but I really do not. I hope this is taken as a cautionary example for anyone who is thinking about applying for a technology job at Alchemer. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. If you are passionate about technology, this place will just make you hate technology and want to become a garbage man.
