A hopeful but disappointing experience

Pros

The relationships you build, some very smart and capable people when managed to their strengths. The team I was a part of was one of the best I've ever worked with.

Cons

Senior leadership lacks the experience to capitalize on the experience/knowledge their people bring, focusing too much on perception to identify issues rather than actually being engaged and looking at data to help identify truly impacting areas of opportunity. Too much faith in legacy employees opinions. The organizational hierarchy /structure makes no sense and lacks true leadership and direction.

Pros

They have free snacks and beverages available. The benefits are really good. Pays really well. They have a downtown location. They have a two day a week work from home policy (but see notes about that in the cons).

Cons

I was hired as a front end developer. Angular/React. They made me develop in Java, JSF, Seam, and JBOSS. I told the manager this was a bad fit after near the very beginning and that I would be completely okay with resigning. They told me to "hold out" for a better project. But the next week the manager said I needed to "engage more" and "gel with the team". After spending weeks trying to ramp up on outdated technology, the next month they gave me the "option to resign". Granted, I had a blank date resignation letter already written before my first one-on-one meeting with the manager. I resigned without hesitation. They had a huge turn over where they got rid of the "bad apples". But the few that stuck around are vehemently resistant to switching to a modern REST-full or microservice architecture. Their stack is very old. You spend most your working day waiting for things to compile. They also make you pay for parking that they lease out. And all the locations are a hike. When it is cold, hot, or raining, it is very unfun. My welcome package include an umbrella. Their two day a week work from home policy is not what it seems. Only the old guard use it and it makes it difficult to ramp up with them. I was given a talking too for using it even when the office was mostly empty. Nobody there that is a new hire seemed happy to me.
