Pros

Not only are my colleagues brilliant, but they are also kind AND fun people. Lots of ecospheres of outside interests are brought into the workplace and shared. Love the small team events that manifest as a result (book clubs, bike rides, laser tag, group runs, game nights, movie nights and museum membership access!) Extremely comfortable working environment (stocked fridge/snacks, bikes on site for us, water toys (kayaks/SUPs), shower/changing rooms). Gorgeous location right on the water and 5 minute walk to Gas Works Park, as well as being right along the Burke Gilman. Lots of support from operations team--thank you for all you do for the staff!

Cons

Location is beautiful, right by the water, but a little remote. Lunch/food options are a 15-20 minute walk (not bad, but when pressed for time, can be inconvenient). However, Bitesquad and Peachd are utilized often AND we get catered lunches several times a week, which helps A LOT!

Pros

Powerful mission, led by an inspirational leader who is widely respected in the field. Extremely high hiring bar - Top notch people across the board. Startup environment, with strong financial backing. Unique blend of research and engineering. People are always encouraged to focus on impact. Coworkers are very friendly, respectful and always willing to help out. Lots of opportunities to learn through weekly tech talks. Administrative operations team is very proactive and always looking for ways to support employees. Fully stocked kitchen and great Wednesday lunches. Beautiful location. Gym membership reimbursement is awesome.

Cons

If I had to really mention something here, For folks coming from large technology companies, some of the support functions such as leave management may feel immature but the team is continuously improving it.

Pros

My first manager at AI2 would often ask people "What are you optimizing for?" in many different contexts (not just machine learning). This was meant to force people to consider what they were really trying to accomplish. When I think about what AI2 optimizes for is assembling an extraordinary team that produces AI applications, libraries and research that benefit humanity in a wide variety of ways. They are well funded, which meant our team was able to focus on the greater impact our projects would have on the AI community and not about revenue. Hiring is done in a unique way relative to many other organizations. Every FTE can see interview loop feedback for prospective candidates and every FTE has an opportunity to advocate for a new hire (even if they were not on the interview loop). I was blown away when I saw this for the first time. Even if I had no feedback for a candidate, having the opportunity from day 1 to influence the team meant a lot. I think this process has been key to consistently creating great teams. Every person I worked with was exceptional across all parts of the org (hr, it, ao, engineering, research, etc.) - they all truly cared about helping you with whatever you needed. This level of transparency didn't stop at hiring - I felt like any question you had about the company was on the table: funding, mission, projects, personnel, etc. Overall, I am grateful for having the opportunity to work at AI2. I learned an enormous amount about how great research is produced and how critical it is to have an exceptional team to achieve that goal.
