Pros

American Express prides itself as a company that values work/life balance and for good reason. With four weeks of paid vacation, frequent teambuilding events, ability to work from home (laptops are provided for all), and 9-5 the norm, the work environment is great if that's what you're looking for.

Cons

If work/life balance is not what you're looking for, the pay-off of relatively low salaries is not that great. You'll get paid about 25-50% more in comparable jobs in other financial services companies. Decision making is also incredibly inefficient and slow due to the corporate culture of "alignment" (which basically means that no one wants to take ownership of projects/initiatives) and the highly-matrixed nature of business units within the company.

Pros

The understanding by leadership about the importance of a work-life balance. The pay is good, the benefits are relatively good, the ability to move around within the company is true value in working for AMEX.

Cons

The constant desire for them to outsource, outtask, and offshore every piece of IT, alienating their professional employees, while treating zero skill customer support representatives as protected people.

Pros

The brand itself is a great one with its huge loyal base of charge cards (gold, green and platinum). The brand has a positive image and is know for outstanding customer service. The work life balance is great especially for women. The paid time off is 4 weeks, pretty good by industry standards. Add to it the flex days, sick days and multiple fun events during the year, and it's a pretty decent life you get. You will find good natured people throughout company and you may not see as much back biting. A few years in American Express can add much to your resume. And the opportunities to work in diverse fields and internationally add much to the value.

Cons

The brand relies too much on the loyal customer base it has held for some time. The value proposition of an American Express Card for youth is debatable, especially charge cards. The more recent exposure to credit cards may cause some problems.
