Pros

If you work at American Express, you have lots of opportunities to move to different groups within the company after a few years - in fact it is encouraged. Company focuses a lot on employee development, there is very good work life balance, the hours are not too bad and the people for the most part are decent and talented. The vacation policy is decent, the location is ok, it is not a very cutthroat place compared to some other corporate or financial services organizations. The company also invests heavily in philanthropy and in community service and volunteer activities which I enjoyed.

Cons

bureaucratic, corporate, not challenging, slow moving

Pros

Competitive pay and competition within the company isn't too stifling. They offer great benefit packages and allow a lot of flexibility in how you want to work with a good work/life balance. I have worked at two other companies prior to this and both other companies had much more serious cultures.

Cons

It is a huge company and does have that huge company feel to it which carries some downsides like it becomes extremely important to be in the right group. A lot of management is incompetent particularly where I work in HR and they would not get jobs at other firms but AMEX is pretty easy with their hiring.

Pros

American Express is very supportive of employees need to advance as well as in making lateral moves for skill expansion. There are many opportunities to move between business units or to specialize in one area. Also, take advantage of all the various employee networks that are invaluable in meeting people in other groups and learning about other business units.

Cons

Legacy technology sometimes slows down innovation, as well as makes it hard to learn your way around unless you find another employee to mentor you. There aren't sufficient self-study options for systems, so you have to ensure you network in order to get properly trained. Training classes are available but not always when you need them.
