Pros

Some coworkers are genuinely nice and kind which makes APS more tolerable.

Cons

If you want to work at a company where management (SLT) and coworkers micromanage you and undermine your work, then APS is for you. You will never grow or learn at an organization where feedback is not given, instead of providing feedback, they talk about you behind your back because they don't like the work you are doing. In turn, it makes morale bad and you lose your psychological safety in the workplace. My experiences are not unique.

Thank you for sharing your insights. Your feedback is invaluable as we seek to listen, learn, and improve. We recognize that a positive organizational culture comes from the top down, and are committed to facilitating productive, encouraging feedback through efforts like our employee-first approach, which encourages staff to provide feedback for supervisors, and our upcoming feedback training, set to launch in Spring 2024. We have recently launched a Learning & Development Initiative dedicated to creating additional supervisor trainings to further empower these efforts, and have implemented new performance management technology to ensure clear channels for feedback to all staff as well. Other exercises in this area include workshops on Power Dynamics and Empathic Communication, and insights from recent culture surveys have resulted in the creation of new Learning Management Systems and Supervisor Academies. We know APS attracts some of the best and brightest, and we want to enable them to shine. We want you to know that we genuinely care about our employees, and your concerns are taken seriously. Our employees feedback has been instrumental in shaping these initiatives, and we appreciate your role in helping us create a better workplace. Your dedication and insights contribute to the strength of our team, and we are thankful to have you as part of the APS community. If you have any further feedback or specific areas you feel we should focus on, please do not hesitate to reach out to hr@aps.org.

Pros

Great benefits. Remote first (though not all are always remote). If you are a regular worker-bee who just wants a good job for good pay and benefits, then this is the place for you.

Cons

If you are an extra-dedicated worker-bee, who loves what you do, this place will nearly kill you. You will exchange your sense of peace for the benefits given. There is more to life than money. As with many other organizations, Senior Leadership continues to restart things every few years, resulting in almost no stability. Leadership does not have a clue who does the work, what the work is, or how it should be done. They stand and issue edicts and the dedicated, loyal, hardworking middle and lower people suffer for it.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences with us. At APS, we deeply value employee feedback, which aligns with our Core Values of Education and Integrity. We're heartened to hear that you've found value in our benefits package, and our commitment to being a remote-first organization. Your insights into the challenges you've highlighted are important to us. We encourage you to connect with our Human Resources team so that we can effectively address these concerns. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance for our employees is a priority, and your dedication is highly valued. We've also taken note of your observations regarding recent changes senior leadership has implemented and their impacts. Our aim is to bring more stability to our strategies and ensure alignment between leadership decisions and their effects on our employees. Your feedback regarding communication opportunities is well-received. We're exploring avenues to foster open dialogue between management and employees, such as regular check-ins, focus group discussions, and a newly launched platform for performance and goal reviews. We are actively establishing feedback loops during our Action & Inspiration sessions. These sessions allow staff to elaborate on survey results and engage in the ideation process for selecting impactful actions to improve both organizational and departmental culture. Your suggestion of in-depth conversations over anonymous surveys resonates with us as well. Your management advice holds immense value, and we're dedicated to ongoing improvements in this area. We understand the importance of embodying our Core Values in our daily operations. Once again, we extend our gratitude for your feedback. Your input is vital as we continue to evolve and enhance our organization. We encourage you to contact Human Resources to contribute your insights further as we work collaboratively to shape a better future.

A Comfortable Place to Work

Pros

Ability to telecommute. Good benefits. Nice new office. These things make the company easy to fall for at first. While those things are nice to have, they don't make the cons bearable.

Cons

Little room for advancement. Good luck moving anywhere within your department. You can be there for 20-plus years and maybe if you are lucky or a favorite you will have been promoted a handful of times. No real growth opportunities. It doesn't matter how qualified you are. You aren't going anywhere in this company. Better get comfortable in the position you are hired in. Salary is on the lower end of the scale. There are annual raises, but they hardly take into account the cost of living, or any comparable salaries with other companies. Zero support from management. They pay you lip service about having an open door policy, etc. but the reality is that they do not go to bat for you, nor do they offer you any kind of support when issues arise.
