Laudable mission, poor leadership

Pros

Stated organizational mission/goals are commendable, generous benefits, remote work options, and overall talented and passionate coworkers.

Cons

Below market value pay scale (except for Director-level and higher which are obscenely overpaid), little or no room for advancement within the org. (HR acknowledges "churn-and-burn" staffing model), extreme disconnect between stated goals and allocation of resources, and little or no understanding of programmatic needs at leadership level (at least partly due to siloed work, but also most certainly due to a lack of organizational will). All of which combines to create an often toxic environment, internally speaking, and a perception among peer organizations that Americares is not seriously committed to their stated mission.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. We appreciate your opinions on the strength of the organization’s mission, benefits package, remote work options in some of our locations/departments, and recognition of passionate colleagues across the organization. Some facts and details about both the strengths and advice shared include (based on our HQ and U.S. locations): 1. Full details about our benefits package can be reviewed here: https://www.americares.org/take-action/jobs/ 2. Our pay scales are determined based on market surveys and ranges are formed using the same methodology for all of our levels. We post our salary bands transparently on job announcements (internally and externally). 3. Since 2022, 23% of our employees have had growth into a new title/new position within the organization; every employee received yearly cost of living increases, most employees received a merit-based increase, and the organization created more than 30 new positions that included options for internal growth. 4. The organization has clear growth paths that detail competency expectations for each role level, and we have a professional development budget as well as training resources for employees’ learning and development. 5. Our internal and external procedures for reporting harassment and any violation of ethics and laws offer various channels including but not limited to a third-party reporting line that gets thoroughly investigated, and direct P&T procedures for reporting with 0% tolerance for retaliation. Additionally, we have avenues to share feedback including 360 reviews and other anonymous feedback systems about people manager performance and competencies. In a humanitarian and development organization where the nature of our work is intensified by the reality of health inequities throughout the world, we have systems to not only address growth and appreciation, but well-being and mental health. Our generous PTO, health insurance, free meditation classes, and free counseling sessions for employees are just some of the essential offerings for well-being and mental health. Just like health is essential for individuals and communities to thrive, our employees and their well-being is essential for our organization’s mission to thrive. We deeply value our employees and will continue to listen to their feedback about ways to continue addressing their growth, voice, value, and more.

Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion. Americares promotes a feedback culture, offers diverse systems and channels for staff and community feedback, and values our team members who actively contribute to that feedback culture. We don’t pick and choose what feedback we consider, and therefore reviews from former employees are part of that feedback culture. We appreciate the time you've taken to share.
