Pros

Since being at Amtrak, I have moved around into different job areas. Although, you tend to get use to doing a certain thing and become comfortable, a new experience is always a welcome change. Although my job title has not change, I held many positions at the company and succeeded. Management has been a very supportive role in my achievements and rewarded me for a job well done.

Cons

The hardest part of the jobs have been being changed shifts frequently. For instance, a senior co-worker may decide to change his shift, suddenly you will be forced to choose another shift in order to have a job.

The IT Department at Amtrak is a Hell-Hole

Pros

If you are good as kissing your bosses ass and doing anything he tells you to do, you can get promoted far beyond your capabilities.

Cons

The fact that this department has had 4 CIOs in the past 2 years speaks volumes. The business hates IT and no matter how hard you work or how much you accomplishment it is never good enough. Worse than that, because of the changes in management there is a constant state of uncertainty. THe leadership in the department does not have the capability to calibrate people. If you kiss the management's ass you will get ahead, whether you contribute anything or not. If you don't kiss the management's ass you will get fired, even if you are the most valuable peson in the department. Working in IT is kind of like being on the Titanic. Using that analogy and that there weren't enough lifeboats for everyone on the Titanic, people fight with each other like there isn't enough work for everyone. The integrity of many of the leaders is lacking. They will take credit for other peoples work, trash their co-workers and do everything they can to destroy people in other groups. This place is trulely a huge hell-hole. I would not recommend taking a job in IT under any circumstances.
