Don't believe the Hype

Pros

The work was interesting. There were many smart people at the table of Technology. Working for an organization like Amtrak had some interesting potential with the plans and proposals for the future.

Cons

Terrible execution of long ranged plans. Even considering the pandemic, the senior management was more interested in jockeying for position than actually getting things done. Extremely toxic environment, which you don't realize until you are out of it. Mistakes are punished instead of coached. People are afraid to try new things or push against the norm, even if it has benefit at the Enterprise level. Staffing evaluations for tough times seemed random and not even mathematically focused. It felt as is some decisions were based on titles, not realizing what the employee brought to the company.

Pros

Excellent Benefits, Excellent Pay, Excellent Retirement! Friendly Co-Workers, Family like environment.

Cons

Don't plan on having a weekend off. Too many Chiefs, not enough Indians. They're always looking to "optimize". Understaffed, and Overworked at times, and getting positions filled is like pulling teeth.

Pros

Convenient location Fair compensation Knowledgeable people Work from home options

Cons

Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing - Fractured organization - people in Philadelphia, Wilmington and D.C all having the same titles, doing the same job but nobody what anyone else is working on Too many contractors that don't know what they are doing and are put in positions that employees should have Amtrak management has no faith in their employees CIO has no regard for employee ideas Constantly reorganizing making the organization worse People that have been with Amtrak for 15-20 years don't want to share information Vendors are given all of the power, management refuses to call them to task Vendors force Amtrak to remove Amtrak employees from projects, even trying to have them fired No money in the budget to maintain the facilities - replace light bulbs, clean carpets, fix server room issues Management doesn't back their employees
