Pros

- Prior to 2023, the WLB was solid and valued across the company. - Prior to 2023, the company was remote-first and embraced remote work - Prior to 2023, the company's senior leadership was more transparent and more communicative.

Cons

As much as I looked forward to a new change in leadership, the culture has eroded tremendously since he started in January 2023. Several actions the past few months have eroded trust in management. Toxic management is common now. Individual contributors are holding the company together, yet they are being cut or offshored. Meanwhile, management layers that provide little value and only create silos continue to bloat with individuals making up their own job titles and roles, and soak up everyone's time with endless meetings. After being told in the second half of 2022 that Appen was a remote-first company, a so-called Return-to-Office was rushed in the space of a month. This RTO is a misnomer because most employees are not based out of an office nor ever worked out of one. Appen has expensive taste for talent but doesn't want to pay for talent, except for, apparently, at the senior mangement-level. This is demonstrated by the increased offshoring to the Philippines and India. This is a short-term gain or win for the executives, but will have disatrious long-term operational and cultural consequences. I'm disappointed to write this as I really enjoyed working at Appen.

Needs a change in leadership

Pros

The people are hard working, passionate, kind humans. The work is interesting with intriguing challenges.

Cons

Leadership is out of touch, a boys club, they don't listen. Business decisions continue to make it harder and harder for employees to be successful and is hurting the core capabilities of the business. Unless things change soon the business will fail. Pay is low for both ICs and FTEs. Continually under resourced. Shifting hiring to low cost markets.

Pros

They do hire some really great people. The teams that I've worked with have been amazing. Great stepping stone for someone who wants to be in the AI/ML industry

Cons

Sadly, the company has just continued to overburden its people due to the organization decisions that it has made. They laid off a lot of people, with some getting same day notice, and then those that remained then had to cope with all the work left behind by those that were laid off. They have justified this by saying they have overhired, but my team specifically did not experience that and have been short of staff since history. Salary is also quite low when I left. Maybe it has changed now but during my time, not only were we overburdened but also underpaid.
