Low Morale - Stay Away

Pros

Nice office, some really good people

Cons

The leadership here has destroyed the morale of the company. So many well-respected performers and leaders have left in the past year. Terrible change management, unattainable targets, constantly changing strategy, not celebrating top performers. The CEO seems tone deaf to the fact that morale matters in a workplace. I have no idea how he is going to regain the trust of his people.

+1 Avoid Customer Success

Pros

The product is great and flexibility and work life balance is good.

Cons

The Customer Success department brings in fresh college graduates and advertises itself as a great department to grow a career - but look at how many people are still there three years later. There are very few Senior or Principal Consultants. The role is not recognizable outside of the Appian industry, meaning you can really only get jobs as an Appian Developer for partner companies. You can try to transfer to Engineering, but that has been discouraged recently with two years minimum spent in CS and managers in CS will make the transfer very difficult (keeping you in the department for 90+ days after you've received an Engineering offer) even if you have more than 2 years. It can be difficult to feel like you are making an impact. It is also interesting and frustrating that it continues to feel like a startup - it has over 2000 employees and is supposed to be a business process company, but consistently incorrectly estimates how long projects last and tries to understaff projects without looking at metrics.

Pros

Money and unlimited PTO. The people were friendly but a little too nerdy for my taste and insecure about their intelligence. When you answered their questions they’d get defensive cause it made them feel dumb. Many came from ivy league so performance was important to them.

Cons

The place ran a bit like a high school fraternity. Every developer went through a highly organized day to day schedule from 9 to 5. Very vindictive and anti-competitive company. Incredibly arrogant on a product that honestly kind of sucks. Their product makes app development harder than coding by hand. I've seen companies transition from appian back to high-code platforms cause appian was so limited on what they needed it to do. Lose the arrogance and you will start to grow as a company.
