Pros

The company definitely takes care of their employees and offer a lot of perks as well as decent benefits. Compensation is pretty great. Co-workers are usually pretty nice and help whenever they can. Hours are ok depending on the project.

Cons

Management is a mess here mainly due to the fact that there are so many chefs in the kitchen. There's project managers, senior techs, your supervisor and some others that will have you going in multiple directions. Rules that are established will be kicked to the curb and when called out on something, they'll deny it and say that it was explained slightly different. The job could be so much easier if the rules that THEY ESTABLISHED were followed and everyone was on the same page. Communication is definitely lacking. Work/life balance will vary. Sometimes you'll be working 4 hours or less and have the day to yourself and other you could be working 10-14 and will have to stay overnight at a hotel. There are some occassions where you'll have to drive 3-5 hours for a 30 minute fix. There will be times you'll be away from home for weeks. There are a ton of apps that you'll need to do your job optimally. You'll need to attend zoom meetings every couple weeks. Co-workers, the Service Center and customers will be calling your personal phone whenever. If your state has MSP, be ready to give an ETA on when you can make it if they call, even if it's 2am.

Pros

Some good people to work with. Flexible hours. Probably the most clever MSSQL database architects and developers outside of Microsoft itself. Pay was good.

Cons

This is specific to Systems organization: - Too heavily reliant on closed source technology (ie. Microsoft/VMWare). - Completely refuses to use modern software architecture. No cloud-based technology. No open source technology. AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes? Never heard of them. - No innovation and no hopes to build technical skills to further career. - Most engineers wouldn't know what a 12-factor app was if one fell out of the sky, landed on their face and started to wiggle. - Purchased horrible software platform riddled with technical debt and wedged it into their already ancient software platform. - In 2016 attempted to layoff half the Systems org and ramp up development in India with inferior engineers. Eventually gave them keys to the kingdom while telling domestic engineer's there jobs were safe. - Product Management (Sales?) - Commits Systems engineers to unrealistic schedules and unmaintainable products. - Employs no business analysts. - Sprints were 4-6 weeks long. - Morale is at all time low. - Culture in the department lends itself to talking smack behind peoples backs.

Pros

As a company, the culture is developing in a positive way. Corporate outings are fun and well considered, generally

Cons

All of the funds are spent on development and IT teams. Finance/accounting teams are run by a team of long-standing bullies; meaning that you will watch your team disintegrate due to mistreatment from the uppers even while you try to protect and encourage your staff. At no point should upper management say out loud that they need lower level staff relocated away from their office proximity because 'they can only be surrounded by the very best talent'. We are (or should be) a team where all are appreciated for their contribution. Just a single example.
