Pros

It was a pleasure working with knowledgable people within UTS and other areas within ASU.

Cons

Where do i start ? 1. VERY poor line level and upper level management. 2. Managers that have NO communication or people skills. 3. Managers that micromanage. 4. Managers that got promoted into management because they were the only people that wanted to accept a promotion. 5. Cronyism throughout all of financial services in that it is your typical governmental organization so managers are managers just because they have been there 15+ years not because they are good managers. 6. Nepotism in Financial Services with mothers, daughters, son-in-laws, etc, all working within the same organization. 7. A revolving door attitude amoung managers in that if someone leaves another warm body came be found to replace that person. 8. No empowerment from management to let even experienced employees manage projects. This is a classic micromanagement practice. 9. Mangers that hire external candidates that are their friends whether or not that person is competent or not. 10. IN-THE-KNOW people that are able to move laterally within the organization into UNposted internally open job positions. 11. An old school VERY female dominated management structure that has been in place for many years and doesn't seem open to new ideas or very tolerant of young males trying to climb the management ladder.

Pros

ASU is a beautiful place to work. The grounds are a horticulturist's dream. Benefits are decent, especially the Arizona State Retirement system if you can hang in long enough to make it work for you, and the tuition deferment is great if you or a family member wants to take classes. The AZ State Retirement system is independently invested and protected from the depredations of state legislators. You'll pay into the retirement system as well as Social Security, but it's worth it.

Cons

Salaries have traditionally been low compared with private industry. Then the recession, combined with the advent of President Crow, brought a wave of job and salary cutbacks. This is in spite of the fact that Mr. Crow is one of the highest-paid university presidents in the country. Building investments continue despite staff cutbacks and a general sense that staff, including teaching staff, is an expendable commodity. Some of this, of course, will depend on your department. The School of Business and School of Engineering, for instance, are funded better than schools like Nursing and Art. Arizona, in general, is not education-friendly. Prepare to hear, every year, threats of cut-backs from the legislature. Performance requirements for central information technology staff, at least, are poorly delineated and seemingly, randomly adhered to.

Pros

Wide variety of programs and many fine professors and inquiring students. Benefits good.

Cons

Salary can be crazily low w/no COLA for years on end. Main problem is that some administrators and profs who brown-nose the top executives lord it over other self-respecting faculty and staff and get the lion's share of resources and perks. Crow and Co. play favorites and spend lavishly on a few star professors while letting salaries stagnate for the large majority who actually keep academic programs going.
