Pros

- Pays good for the geographic.

Cons

- This company has been sold and bought few times and probably will be sold again in the next few years. Not creating values for employees or to the general public. They only care about the top few people who owns the company get quick rich and get out, while keep the shareholder (presumably more of the top 0.001% rich people) happy. Another corporate america in the corn field. - Hostile work environment if you're not white male. (I've heard xenophobic comments regularly against certain ethnic groups and women, for which HR nor management did nothing.) - You'll get career opportunities if your boss or boss's boss likes you regardless of your ability or effort.

Pros

It pays the bills and they have pretty good benefits for FTE's. Building is gorgeous.

Cons

Very questionable business practices. I personally feel they are incredibly unethical. Due to massive attrition - with key people still leaving in droves - they are lacking solid processes and procedures. A few people seem to be holding it all together. VP level management only supports the managers. Lower level employees (professional level) have no recourse for issues or support. Management breeds a very toxic environment. The business side seems decent, but IT is a cluster. No one seems to be happy. Lots and lots of very shady things going on there.

Culture is like Athens, Greece

Pros

Gym in building Easy commute to work

Cons

Athene’s culture can be best described as that of Athens, Greece. Not only is getting IT services from the helpdesk a total nightmare, the whole company is a seemingly well built organization that is bound to crumble any second. Bureaucracy is rampant. If you are not a boot licker, be prepared to be skipped out on promotions and rather, be swamped with more work. Upper management could care less about your goals; they only care about filling their own pockets just like the man at the top. This creates a culture where gossiping and backstabbing becomes the norm. The turnover rate for the actuarial department is at a whopping 20%. Also, Athene only recruits locally so you are surrounded by Iowa/Drake/UNI/etc grads who I wouldn’t exactly say are the brightest of the bunch. Finally, there is no diversity whatsoever in this company and exempt/salaried workers are used to the company’s full advantage. Do yourselves a favor and google AtheneUSA. To me, it seems like this company has fun screwing over their policyholders and scamming them out of their hard earned money. Do you really expect a company that can’t even serve their most important assets (the policyholders) properly serve their own employees?
