Good Pay but no more Work Life balance

Pros

They pay you well. Their products are special and innovative. They provide you with everything you need to get your job done. All of the high-end tech stacks and Enterprise-Level tools (Slack, ChatGPT...) The team is big, lots of great coworkers. Engineers here are at a high level, which could be helpful to work with. Very customer-driven.

Cons

No more work-life balance. Very Amazon culture now. They shift to "work harder and much harder, or AI will replace you". So be very mindful if you want to join. This place is now a performative organization, where everyone tries to perform, or act as if they are performing at their best. The performance curve from Amazon is just a calibration tool based on upper management's needs. There was a case where an employee who needed development was rated Achieves because they just got promoted. Bad management recently, with constant changes in leadership and direction in a single year, caused significant execution trouble. VPs and Directors do not care about employees' mental health. I think they don't care for their own either, in order to keep their job.

Micromanaging 2023

Pros

Good pay but no more work life balance and crappy managers.

Cons

All team managers started micromanaging tactics, such as setting up required SMART goals and daily updates on progress of those goals and assigned tickets every week if not sometimes everyday. This leaves no breathing room for employees and has been counterproductive on improving performance.

Pros

First and foremost, Axon has an amazing mission. I was excited to be a part of that.

Cons

There’s zero work life balance. They tout “non-accrued PTO” , which they say is unlimited but there’s a hard cap at 3 weeks. Making it very hard to travel internationally if you don’t live in the US. You’re expected to work 12 hour days and be perfect at all times. There can be no slip ups, burn out, or any idea that you’re exhausted. It’s often been said “40 hours is the floor not the ceiling”, meaning it’s expected to go well beyond a normal workweek consistently and leadership pushes that. When you spend weeks preparing an update for Jeff Kunins, he will spend 30 minutes berating you on how you wrote 2 sentences, instead of focusing on the actual problem. If Jeff decides he wants something done, you are to make it happen and give no opinion. All company values go out the door at that moment. Axon is growing at a pace that it’s obvious they don’t know what direction to go. They won’t listen to leaders they’ve hired or promoted to help get us to the larger mission.
