Pros

Benefits are average, some portions of the business have very positive personal growth potential. Dedicated professional staff keeps operations running in spite of leadership failures.

Cons

Poor executive and upper management leadership for several years has put the company in decline. Significant salary, benefits and job security declines over the last couple years with little end in sight. Ethical double standards for senior leaders abound and the Human Resources group feeds the problem.

Pros

BAE is large and there is the potential to work on interesting and important projects. In addition they have a full suite of benefits and a large catalog of internal career enhancement training courses. Granted the benefits (especially) health care seem to get worse each year, but I think that may be industry wide due to the economy and the political turmoil surround that topic.

Cons

BAE is large and thus they treat their employees like any other large bureaucracy: You're just a number. . On the project side you combine the bureaucracy of a large company with the bureaucracy of your main customer (US gov't) and you end up wasting a lot of time doing low value busy work. Finally, the group I was in had some of the worst line level management I've ever experienced in my entire career. Almost all of them were good workers who were promoted above there level of competence. It seems personality and leadership ability were not considered important at this low level. I would doubt and hope this was not the case company wide.

Pros

Pretty good benefits, competitive salary. Closed during Christmas while paid for those days off. The company is flexible in terms of taking vacation days.

Cons

No innovation at BAE. You will simply write the software that you are told to. There is no room for creating new products or prototyping new ideas. Depending on who you work for it can be a good or bad experience. Some projects exists in a secured area so the use of Open Source is not allowed. No Internet or cell phones allowed either. With the government as the primary customer things move more slowly than your average commercial company. Use of state of the art technology is always behind that of commercial companies. Some people don't mind though and will stay with BAE for a lifetime to receive a salary and benefits. When I worked at BAE I felt my software skills getting old. It was time to move on.
