Pros

Flexible working, family friendly, working on high profile topics that often make the headlines, varied work, access to overseas jobs in British Embassies, lots of chances to build a network with various sectors of business

Cons

Lots of cynicism from lifelong civil servants, lots of bureaucracy although no worse than any other large organisation, limited and diminishing budgets, sometimes change happens at the whim of politicians

Pros

- Department has influence due to Secretary of State and current poor state of economy - Having come through downsizing and restructuring, there are job and promotion opportunities - Some good people

Cons

- General civil service problems of pay freezes, pension cuts, etc. - Civil service is the whipping boy for the media and politicians - BIS staff not generally passionate about what they do - Some dead wood in senior positions - Pretend to value 'empowerment' but really expect managers to watch 100% of what you do
