Pros

I worked as an Editorial Assistant at Benchmark Education for almost a year and had a very positive experience. It was an entry-level position, but all of the senior editors were very patient with me, eager to teach, and easy to work with. Almost everyone I came into contact with during my time there was kind, polite, smart, and hardworking, which I think is a direct reflection of how the company is run. It was impressive to me that my coworkers always treated me with respect under all circumstances. Benchmark is a family-run company, and that’s reflected in the atmosphere in the best of ways. Management is very generous with employees. There are frequent company lunches and events, workout classes twice a week, and helpful training sessions. Everyone takes the products very seriously and cares strongly about the impact they have. Many of the editorial employees were once teachers and all are invested in improving teaching methods. Coworkers are very close and it really does feel like a family environment. Although there is some tension at times, it is nothing I haven’t seen at other companies I’ve worked for, and, honestly, I think it’s a good thing that management is open and transparent about their expectations. It’s also to be expected in a fast-paced environment with deadlines. I would recommend this company to anyone. It has the feel of a family-owned business, but is also rapidly expanding and taking big steps. There’s so much growth happening, but employees still know that the company cares about them. And for people like me who are just starting out in entry-level positions, there’s so much to learn at Benchmark and people who are more than willing to put in the extra effort to teach you.

Cons

Employees don't always have the tech resources they need to do a job most efficiently, but that's because the company is growing quickly. I saw major improvements on this issue during my time there because management is open to suggestions.

Pros

The growth Benchmark has experienced over the last few years has really transformed this company, and not in a positive way. One of the best things about working here was how closely each team and department worked together to create products. Most employees were passionate and interested in the products they developed, but over time, the company became intensely focused on quantity over quality in regards to their products and their employees. The company began hiring anyone with a pulse at one point, which is incredibly negligent and problematic. Adequate training was never provided. It's very much an "every man for himself" workplace, but that kind of an environment can't flourish when the management has extremely poor communication and is constantly changing the rules and processes. Talented people do flow in and out, and if you're able to work closely with some of these people, consider it a win. However, Benchmark does not skimp on technology and at their deeply buried core, they want to produce great educational products. For a smaller company, they're producing work quickly, but they're never quite ahead of the market. Hopefully they find their footing again soon.

Cons

For whatever reason, the company frequently disregards employee opinions and ideas. The benefits are poor and inadequate. The pay scale is incredible skewed and unfair. Management is stingy and inflexible with time off, holidays, and work from home. Your best bet is to schmooze your way into upper management's good graces and constantly prove you do valuable, quality work. Which, should be a given in most places, but Benchmark plays the favorites game.
