If You Can't Take the Heat...

Pros

Independently-owned with owners on premises daily, flexibility, independence if you find your niche and your voice. Steady workflow and trend-bucking growth.

Cons

You better know how to do your job without hand-holding. If you are too sensitive to other peole's anxiety it can be very stressful. Also unrealistic deadlines from upper management. In other words, it's a publishing job. If you don't find your niche, you may find yourself doing a job you have no interest in. As noted elsewhere the owner is volitile and has no filter, if you are offended or traumatized, maybe you should go find your dream job elsewhere.

Micromanaged chaos

Pros

I struggle to find advantages to working at BEC. Yes, there is free lunch. And yes, you have the opportunity to try new things that may not be in your job description. But, there are severe disadvantages that must be taken into consideration before making the choice to work here.

Cons

The environment at BEC is very unhealthy. Micromanaged chaos is the best way to describe it. Employees run around in circles trying to please upper management, which is an impossible task. As a result, it takes an enormous amount of time to accomplish anything. Add to this the fact that nobody truly 'owns' any project. All decisions are ultimately made by the owners. Of course that's their prerogative, but be upfront about it and don't lead employees on to think that they are driving the bus on any project. Many employees relocate to the area for the job at BEC, and then end up stuck in a dead-end job in lower Westchester. It's not easy to find work, especially for those who are in the twilight of their careers. So they put up with the ridicule and shameful, hurtful language that's routinely thrown around the office. Yes, there are frequent comments about appearance, sexuality, gender, you name it. And no, Feb 18 commenter, it's not ok. It's illegal. BEC has a horrible reputation in the industry. Not only is the workplace intolerable, but their sales practices are dishonest and their product is second-rate. It is baffling that they have done as well as they have, but it is what it is. All that said, if you're considering a job at BEC, do yourself a favor and stay far, far away. It is not worth the stress that you will inevitably be put through. It is not worth the scar that it will leave on your resume. And it is most definitely not worth your personal and professional integrity.
