Pros

- Lots of smart, extremely kind people to work with - Feeling of satisfaction that the product is really helping merchants - Opportunity to do creative work and learn across departments

Cons

A little ways in to the classic "Agile Transformation" which is forcing all teams (including the Kanban ones) to Scrum. Even in the honeymoon phase, teams are obsessing over burndowns instead of creating value. Various people have been given authority to do this transformation for the sake of predictability. It's pretty clear this is a useful way of avoiding responsibility for mistakes and lack of vision between leadership in Product, Engineering, and Program Management.

best job to worst

Pros

Free Lunch, Open Vacation, job security if you are in good-old-boy club

Cons

Has gone from best place to work to the worst in a span of 2 years. Engineering management has too many large egos pretending to be humble. If you are a low level engineer with great ideas that don't fall within the broader company skill set then good luck. Your ideas will not really be considered. Free lunch for only some departments and not others?

We embrace ideas from every engineer across our global team. One example of this is our multi-day Hackathons which we hold every 6 months. These events are not just for fun; they help steer our technology direction. Our Hackathons provide an outlet for employees to build projects from their own creativity and present them to the broader team. We’ve already incorporated multiple Hackathon projects into our roadmap, with more to come. Some examples of the technology decisions we’re making include the responsible adoption of public cloud services, decomposing our core app into independent services, and embracing the use of Open Source software. These choices will enable us to deliver better software and services with higher quality. We’re making these decisions based on experience and the context of industry best practices.

Celebration of Chaos

Pros

* Free lunch everyday, healthy and tasty. Unlimited wine, beer (and other choices) for the whole team, almost every afternoon. * HR (People people) team is energetic and works with a sense of purpose. * Smart CEO with loads of experience.

Cons

* Strategy and direction changes quite often, yet to find the right fitment in the value chain. * Utter chaos inside the engineering organization. Any attempt to make things structured is touted "anti-startup culture". Team relies on individual performances and hopes to magically scale up one fine morning. * Highly political atmosphere, despite its small size. A few bloated egos hurt the spirit of many. * Immature hiring process result in high attrition rates (voluntary and involuntary) at all levels. * Career growth is limited (barring a few senior managers) for most of the employees
