Pros

BV is full of amazing and talented professionals.

Cons

I was hired into a virtual role with BV, 100% WFH. I asked my BV recruiter multiple times during the hiring process if this work profile was permanent or if there would be a chance that the virtual arrangement was temporary. I was assured that BV had embraced the 100% WFH model and that my role would remain virtual. Well.........on top of all the other internal operating issues that BV has, we recieve a companywide email last week from our "CEO" that they are dissolving the virtual and remote work profiles and all employees, if within 75 miles of an office are required to come in, at minimum 3 days per week. This massive change is also to be implemented within 4 weeks of the email. To make this change even worse, our CEO is on record stating that our current virtual and remote work profiles would remain unchanged going forward as this has made BV successful and competetive in hiring and maintaining top talent. This was stated just a few short months ago. I've worked in a corporate environment for about 8 years now and I have witnessed some shady management. However, this level of dishonesty from a CEO is disheartening.

We know this will be a significant adjustment for many of our professionals. With that in mind, we're taking a tiered approach to welcome professionals back to the office in 2023. Depending on the classification, some professionals will only return one day a week in January, two in February, and then three in March, giving time to acclimate to this new hybrid schedule. We are also continuing to evaluate Virtual mileage around US and global offices as we understand each market has unique transit patterns. The radius for Virtual professionals in Kansas City has been reduced to 50 miles.

Pros

BV used to be a good company to work for. Overall good talent, good reputation and interesting projects.

Cons

1950's policies. Policies hurt working women, single parents, and anyone who needs flexibility. No schedule flexibility. Must be in 3 days a week for 8 working hours each day. This is tracked, reported and enforced. Micromanagement - required to badge in while being recorded on closed circuit cameras and wear a "beacon" tracker so they can track where you are and how long you have been in the office. Management gets reports weekly for enforcement. No flexibility in this policy, threats of termination for non-compliance.

We appreciate you taking time to share your personal feelings and views. BV is still a great company to work for due to our people and the projects you mention! We also do have flexibility--not many companies offer the 9/80 scheduling that we do--a three-day weekend every other week?! That's a benefit of a flexible company like BV for single parents, busy families, and everyone in between. If a company these days doesn't have cameras in the building, that's quite a safety issue! It may have been sufficient in the 1950's, but not in 2024. The access control system enhancements are crucial to the safety of our professionals and ensure that first responders have critical safety information during an emergency. The safety and health of employees, clients, and contractors is a Black & Veatch core value, and we have been working on these upgrades as part of our technology roadmap for several years. Concerning the hours spent working in the office, we found that there was a broad misinterpretation of the policy. Some supervisors were allowing people to work less hours in the office and some at home on in office days, but the policy has always been to work a full day in the office--8 or 9 hours whether or not you have a 9/80 schedule. Unfortunately, some are seeing it as something being taken away since they've been doing since we came back to the office, but the policy is not new. Thanks again for your feedback!

Pros

Used to be a great progressive company I was proud to be a part of - not anymore.

Cons

BV recently announced they are revoking remote work options across the company for employees (even those hired in the last year under the condition of permanent remote status) despite increased productivity because management “feels” everyone would benefit from collaborating in person.

Our hybrid model applies to professionals who live within a certain distance of local offices - working three days in the office with flexibility to work from anywhere, two days a week. Field professionals will remain remote.
