Pros

Pay is market rate or slightly above. Location is nice, office is relatively quiet.

Cons

Environment is wacky, does not follow industry standards and slows development due to unnecessary complications in the design. Management has integrity problems and attitude problems. No real teamwork. Established clique of young inexperienced developers who make poor decisions, see lack of industry standards and design problems mentioned above. Terrible database design. Slow and overly complex. Won't listen to experienced advice. Poor application design project management. There is no design phase, developers are not consulted on ux standards or general design principles. This is typical though, they are working to improve. Too many days off and holidays will cost you if you're a contractor, but they are lenient about making up hours.

Pros

Prior to being purchased this was a wonderful place to work but Blackhawk Network management is not concerned with employee morale.

Cons

When Blackhawk bought our company we thought it was going to be like you hear about other northern California companies- high energy and world class in terms of employee morale and work/life balance, we were in the business of employee engagement after all right? Such was not to be. They immediately gutted our employee recognition program and then insulted everyone by reducing our annual service anniversary award from $10 per year to $1 per year of service. What we failed to realize was that Blackhawk was spun off from Safeway and the grocery chains are notorious for having poor employee relations. Blackhawk has retained that aspect of their culture. They bought into an industry that demands strong, personal relationships with their customers but they don't make decisions that way- they are 100% focused on selling gift cards and automating every process they can.

Pros

Fast paced environment where you can learn a lot, cool people all around. Emerging industry with something new to learn every week.

Cons

They say they promote internal growth but it's all talk. You would be lucky to advance far in this company. Salaries are far below market in an area as expensive as the Bay Area. Workload does not reflect wages at all. When push comes to shove, the company policies will do whatever they can to get the most out of you while simultaneously ousting you regardless of work ethic or credibility. With the tremendous amount of company growth, the lower level employees see no extra compensation while the higher ups collect their bonuses. Lackluster Stock program and no bonuses, mixed with a poor salary and terrible growth opportunity makes this a company nobody would want to work for.
