Pros

The mission: If you truly believe in proving incredible care to EVERYONE despite their demographics, then this is the place for you. Benefits cannot be beaten, they are amazing. Pay is incredible too. You're not going to find a better combo anywhere else.

Cons

This place loves to emphasize that they treat "Minorities" however, they do not like to hire minorities in higher positions. You'll have no problem finding a Black or Latina nurse working on a med surge floor, but they seem to be missing when it comes to higher-level floors such as ED, ICU, and even L&D. Why are there so many White women who aren't even from the surrounding neighborhoods treating the patient population that they've never had any interactions with beyond in a healthcare setting? They will hire a White nurse from suburban mass with an ADN faster than they'd hire a Black woman who speaks Spanish, has her BSN, and is from Dorchester. Then they'll be surprised when little Becky cannot handle the patient population and leaves them for a hospital like MGH after their contract is over. Or she'll realize the pay is too good, and stay on as a bitter, barely competent nurse who hates treating the population she so desperately wanted to serve coming out of school. White nurses and HR are the gatekeepers, and they're responsible for this. They get their White friends and family members in here who don't even believe in the mission, they just want the $$$.

Great Colleagues, Bad Management, Impossible Workloads

Pros

The patient population is diverse, and if you enjoy a challenging work environment you'll never be bored. Your colleagues are probably going to be great people who genuinely care about the hospital and the people it serves. If you work an office job at BMC it seems like the stresses are way, way less than when you actually are involved in care.

Cons

The hospital runs like a for-profit business, is top-heavy, and is completely disconnected from the realities of patient care with the kinds of patients it serves. Management on all levels in many departments seems like it's staffed by people who were hired for prestige reasons or people who were promoted because they've just been around the longest. Nobody in power seems to have any experience managing themselves, let alone entire teams of people. Initiatives and big hospital changes come down on direct-care staff who get punished when ridiculous quotas aren't met, and everyone fears further repercussions if they speak out about their worries or feeling overwhelmed.
