Pros

+Highly successful company generating high revenue with such a lean workforce +Employees receive quarterly profit sharing and awesome health insurance +Complimentary snacks in the kitchen +Employees are smart and motivated; most are very friendly +Good work/life balance. Majority of people leave the office by 5-6pm. +A lean workforce means getting your hands dirty & learning how to build processes from the ground up. You may receive a much better learning experience here than at large corporations.

Cons

-Quarterly profit sharing is presented as a “bonus” in addition to base salary, when in reality the base salaries here are below industry average, so profit sharing is a MUST in order to reach industry average -No HR department and inappropriate racist comments/sexual harassment situations are overlooked. There are no repercussions for an employee in upper management joking to two people speaking a foreign language that we are not in a nail salon. That’s only one example. -Lack of people development. Not much opportunity for career growth. There is no clear career development plan in place, so less seasoned employees tend to treat the company as a temporary pitstop in their career. No career matrix laid out for employees. The company tends to avoid promoting from within. Some employees who have been here many years have their dreams crushed when the company hires someone external instead.

Yes, there are pros and cons to working at a smaller (~100 employees now) fast-paced company. Generally, there is upward mobility in the form of increased job responsibilities and higher wages/bonuses as we grow as many employees have experienced. Management does value the contributions of every employee and managers (including and especially the CEO) are open to complaints and feedback of all kinds. The CEO's door is open to anyone who feels like they want to go straight to the top about any concerns.

Good, but with problems.

Pros

There's interesting work to be done across a variety of projects, which is unusual for a company that has a relatively small range of projects. People are often very friendly and overall the atmosphere of working is good. I am not someone who has made many long term friends from work but at BrightSign that feels somewhat different. The hours are also usually good, with an ability to feel genuinely "off the clock" when you go home as opposed to the soul-crushing obsessiveness many Bay Area companies believe is good. Profit-sharing is good.

Cons

As a growing company it has some problems with HR issues. Some employees have behaved inappropriately but without consequence, and as the company was built on a lot of familiar, and occasionally nepotistic, hiring there aren't always avenues open to younger employees to resolve these problems. It can feel that there is something of an "Old Boys' Club" operating, but I don't believe it exists with malice, rather just a lack of awareness. The policy on having no raises, rather increased profit sharing, and a lack of rewarded upward mobility is bad and definitely going to cause issues with talent retention.

Thank you for the review. At BrightSign, open communication is encouraged. If an employee feels that there is no avenue for such with their immediate supervisor, they are encouraged to speak with the next level up, all the way up to the CEO. Inappropriate behavior is not tolerated at BrightSign and our employee handbook clearly spells out what is and is not appropriate at work. Employees are encouraged to speak with management about anything they feel is inappropriate, with the assurance that their input will remain anonymous. While several BrightSign employees have worked together at previous companies, nepotism is not the norm at BrightSign. We are an equal opportunity employer. With regards to upward mobility, there have been several employees successfully promoted within the same department and cross-departmentally throughout the Company. We do our best to encourage and promote individuals who work hard and want upward mobility. With regard to compensation, our CEO and CFO review each employee’s performance and total compensation against the Radford Global Technology Salary Survey every six months. Compensation increases are given regularly to ensure employees are paid competitive market rates for the area in which they live. BrightSign has one of the highest levels of shared profit – 25% of the company’s annual profit is put back into the pool for employee profit sharing. Profit sharing is paid in cash to employees each quarter.

Pros

The company is small with maybe 100 employees, so there was a lot of room for experience from the bottom up. You get to learn every step of the workflow since you were the only one managing a project/task. Great learning experience, however manual and tedious.

Cons

A place you can't climb the "corporate ladder" very far, this is a place you work when you've reached your career ceiling. Very slow career growth, if even. Not your usual Silicon Valley tech company. "Unlimited vacation" isn't actually unlimited, even if you get your work covered/finished while away from work. Upper management does not seem to care about their employees on the ground level.

Yes, a smallish company does not present the same corporate ladder climbing opportunities as one will find at a larger corporation. Employees who do well at BrightSign are open to taking on new responsibilities and thus expanding their career growth and enjoying new experiences along the way. If anyone doesn't feel the company's policies or benefits or anything else is clear, we highly encourage you to talk to your manager or the CEO.
