Pros

Being able to make a difference in the lives of the developmentally disabled consumers that we serve.

Cons

Sub-standard wages, with no raises in over 8 years. While the cost of living has sky-rocketed, ResCare has not provided it's employees even a cost of living raise in over 8 years. Upper management has a tendency to show favoritism to certain departments over others and tends to ignore major issues that arise, by 'brushing them under the rug.' Unable to recruit quality, dependable, reliable and qualified employees, due to poor wages and no opportunity for raises.

Pros

I met a very nice person that I will be friends with forever. The training is good.

Cons

The pay is very low: $8.50. My relief for the overnight shift was late every day for 9 months. He would relieve me as late as two hours. The company had unrealistic expectations about the staff and their time. The training would just occur and by that I mean with no notice. Many times people would end their 7AM overnight shift only to have to be at training at 8AM. This was inconvenient especially for people who has other obligations. The residential home I was assigned to was filthy. The smell, flies (yes flies because of the bodily fluids from the residents), and inability of the company to hire responsible people (I believe due to the low wage) kept the residential home from reaching a standard of cleanliness. The staff spent a lot of time smoking in the garage and this allowed all types of insects into the home. Every time I came on duty I would have to spend two hours cleaning just to make the residential home suitable enough to sit on the sofa. I also had to start bringing my own cleaning supplies: detergent, bleach, cloths, air freshener, and bug spray. I also brought a sheet from home to lay across the sofa. The residential home had an odor. No matter how much I cleaned the home reverted to its unhealthy state due to a lack of cleanliness of the staff. The health insurance was expensive, especially compared to the rate of pay. The number of uneducated females with more than 1 child would not be able to afford the insurance unless the continued to work the overtime, but then their family became neglected.
