The design department is struggling with a lot of turn over, due to both people quitting because they simply can’t take working in a psychologically unsafe environment a second longer, or being fired for when they have the courage to speak up. I want to make it VERY clear that design leadership is the specific reason for the lack of psychological safety. Up until the very end, I was nervous about giving feedback even when there were no repercussions because the culture is set up to make you fearful. Feedback at BT is an escalator descending from one level to the next below… you’ll never find one you can ride up. If you somehow do, it’ll stop a few seconds in and jolt you to the floor where you’ll be put in your place and have your abilities questioned until you’re pushed out. It took me several weeks to get to a place where I felt confident as a designer again because I was made to feel lesser than by leaders that should have been helping me grow.
All it takes to succeed at Buildertrend is a buddy to get you in and a buddy to keep promoting you (if you come in at a high level in the first place). If you do make the mistake of going to work here, ask for a dictionary specific to your role… you won’t see the words promotion, raise, support, or empowerment. Speaking of raises, I’ll tell you exactly why you will never get one: the company culture has established that to meet the requirements of your role, you MUST go above and beyond. However, there are zero job descriptions that define expectations so everything is arbitrary and you’ll probably just be caught off guard when you mess up.
Please just don’t waste your time here. There’s plenty of other fish in the product design sea.
