As an open, collaborative workspace, we are able to see where our peers and co-workers need help and as a result can ensure they receive the right support at the right time. We’re sorry to hear about your experience with management and your work-life balance. Our teams drive a strong sense of ownership into their projects, taking pride in their work; but work life balance is important to us as reflected in our policies prohibiting late or weekend working. Our leave and holiday policy is designed to ensure there are sufficient annual, casual and family leaves. However, we appreciate you bringing your experience to our attention and will review how we can improve on communicating and practising these policies.       Pros

      The people are great and make it a lovely place to work. Very social if you are in business services but not much opportunity to social with the more senior engineers. Good location if in Bath as close to train station and bus station and can commute by walking or bike.

      Cons

      Employees in business services are looked down on by the engineers and will not really socialise with them. There seems to be no adherence to the internal rules. Many of the partners just run projects without any thought for the consequences or without the correct approvals being sought and when challenged they do not care. I have never worked in such a contradictory place. Some of the directors and associate directors will not heed advice from other departments they have an arrogance and assume they know better and then when they have messed it up ask the relevant business services team to sort it out. Overworked and when I raised that I have issues due to stress nothing was done about it other than it will be ok soon. Whilst there was no expectation to work more than my contracted hours it was the mental pressure of knowing how much I had to do and how many people were yelling at me with little help from senior managers above me that me made me decide to leave. Generally the environment can be deemed toxic. This company has more mental aid first aiders than actual first aiders and I think that speaks volumes about this company.

You raise a number of points for further investigation, notably the need for greater accountability, improved communications and respect. It is disheartening to hear about the ‘mental pressures’ you experienced as we aim to safeguard our employee’s mental health at all times. The high number of mental health first aiders you refer to are an example of this, these positions are encouraged and supported by the business but are all assumed by volunteers. This employer/employee partnership reflects the shared desire to preserve the wellbeing of all those who work at BuroHappold. We take on board your advice to management and have already escalated your feedback to our UK Senior Leadership Board, thanks again for your comments.

      Pros

      really interesting projects so great learning on th e job. Partners and leaders try really hard to engage and listen to staff and include people's views with things like staff surveys, rungway app, yammer etc.

      Cons

      some people have never worked anywhere else so thinkthe grass is greener - they take things for granted rather than see what's good about working in a smaller, friendly firm as opposed to the big corporates that engineering firms have become
