Being a Tutor at C2 Education

Pros

This is a good part-time job for those pursuing higher education or are thinking about teaching as a full-time career. Most other tutors I met here fell into this category, and are some of the brightest people I've had the pleasure of working with. Management is hands-off when it comes to tutors handling sessions. This is good, because you can form your own style of teaching while learning your co-workers' methods as well. Also, the old curriculum C2 provides is very well-organized and easy to use. Diagnostic tests are given to students before they start sessions, and interim tests are given after some session have occurred. This is an excellent way to determine if a student is actually improving or not. If you have a good center director (like I did), your work will go noticed and you'll truly feel that you're making a difference in the education of others. My director actually organized a couple of social events for her employees to celebrate our accomplishments and the work we've done for the company. She truly understands where C2 Education's success comes from. For the most part, students at the center I taught at were well-behaved and motivated. They're immensely appreciative of what you do for them, and seeing their improvements from day 1 makes all of your efforts well worth it.

Cons

Ask any tutor at C2 Education what their least favorite part of their job is, and the large majority of them will have the same answer: the 3 to 1 ratio. Whenever possible, the schedule will force you to tutor 3 students at the same time, each at different grade levels and with various needs. This means that on average, parents are paying for 1 hour of tutoring when they are actually getting 20 minutes. It doesn't take much to see how unfair this is, even when classes are set up properly by directors/assistant directors. Your hours are never guaranteed, because they are all in the hands of parents. Although our assistant director emailed us our schedules for the week, 95% of the time I came in, it was changed. If enough of your students cancel, the ones left over will be shifted to another tutor to keep the ratios high, taking you off the schedule completely. Sometimes, however, you could have students added on to your schedule last minute. From other reviews I've read on here, some center directors can make your experience here a living hell. So, research ahead of time which ones don't fit this bill, and work in one of those centers. Again, this was thankfully not the case for me. The new SAT curriculum is riddled with errors (especially in the answer keys), which many students constantly point out. Because C2 tutors are the ones who wrote all of the questions found in it, this easily leads to confusion as to what's being asked, or even how to solve the problem at all! Corporate structure follows a quantity over quality mentality, which is evident from the fact that while new centers are being opened all the time, the quality that may be lacking in existing centers is more so ignored. Considering the new CEO used to work at the corporate side of Starbucks, it's clear why this approach is being made, but that doesn't make it any less dangerous.

Thank you for your contribution at C2! Its great to hear that you enjoy working with our students. I encourage you to reach out to your Center Director and regaional leadership team regarding the stress and lack of communication you are experiencing. Through our Teacher Development Initiative, teachers have different ways to increase their pay, develop their skills, and become certified to teach new subjects. For teachers looking to branch out, we have many teachers who have transitioned to other positions, including becoming Center Directors, working in Curriculum, and becoming Teacher Trainers. We not only want to find great teachers to join C2, we want to develop you and the rest of our current teachers to become even better.
