      Pros

      There are many talented and dedicated expert individuals in this organization. I learned much and appreciate the time spent there.

      Cons

      The economic downturn of 2008 finally caught up with CDM Smith as the backlog of projects decreased. A tremendous amount of focus is on personal utilization and projected billable hours, so staff who may be meeting or close to their utilization goals but have a decreasing projected long-term workload are susceptible to facing initial reduction in hours or being laid-off.

      Pros

      - Good place to start your career if salary is not a big concern. - Interesting projects to engage. Convincing your group leader, project managers to let you try them is a different story. - There are a lot of nice folks in the organization.

      Cons

      - You will get typecast in the long run. - They'll expect you to work beyond the 40 hr limit. Which is legit if there are deadlines. But when it comes to CDM, they expect it every week, round the year. - There are a few bullies who will burn out the younger professional. - If you happen to be a foreign national on H1B visa and you encounter visa approval issues when you are abroad, be very worried. They will abandon you. It happened to me.

      Pros

      Very intelligent and articulated coworkers. Corporate structure encouraged new and exciting employee development. I enjoyed working there with the right mix of entry level engineers through experience engineers. Very efficient and effective engineering processes, after 100 years of business this company has a lot to offer and to learn from. Great engineering culture and business management.

      Cons

      Margins are razor thin in the industry and billable hours were very important to keep high as a new engineer. Jobs are very related to the amount of work being "won".
