A Company That Acts Its Age

Pros

Great Brand. And, there are some great people working here.

Cons

This is a 100 year old company that acts its age - think glacial. If you have a dream, initiative, creativity and/or sophisticated tech skills, this is not a good career build. One way to think about it is: If you were comfortable hanging with the C- students in school, this would be a great fit. If not, take a pass. The environment can be constraining, and very rule-bound. The company has been recognized for diversity, but actions don't always match the values.

These statements don't seem to align with where the company is today. A lot may have changed since you were here. Thank you for your thoughts.

Pros

- Good work/life balance - Competitive pay - Lots of volunteering opportunities and a culture that emphasizes that

Cons

- Mediocre talent - They can't compete on talent with tech companies in SF and the Pennisula, even with competitive pay. Plus, they moved much of their tech operations to Glendale, Arizona some years ago. Let's just say it's not talent central there. They spent literally hundreds of millions of dollars in each of their policy and claim systems. That's an astronomical number relative to the revenue and size of the company. Research on their digital presence and you will see how late they are to having basic functionalities like auto-payment. A recent upgrade kept directing customers to the AAA NCNU website when customer service kept telling customers that they are not AAA NCNU. Just can't get their act together. - Can there be such a thing as too much volunteering? I support volunteering activities but do you go to work to volunteer or to build a career? All well and good to encourage employees to do good, but in the midst of a tight deadline, you may hear someone say something like "I'll be doing clean up in Yosemite for two days", and no one would say a word. It's a comfortable, almost entitled mentality. Again, if you are looking for a lifer job that doesn't require a lot of heavy lifting, it's great. - Politics, politics. Lots of political in-fighting among its executive ranks. Constant re-org. - Boring industry. This last one is not their fault. Yes, there is a lot of science involved in running an insurance industry, no question about that. But insurance is borrrring.

Pros

Steady income that paid the bills, barely

Cons

When you first get hired you are sold a bill of goods that just isn’t there. There’s a bizarre dynamic in the call center where favoritism is in the open. The people who are the best agents don’t get recognized if they aren’t part of the ‘inner circle.’ I would have felt offended by this under normal circumstances but the inner circle is a bunch of yes men and women who I had no desire to be like. Management as a whole...there’s a couple good supervisors but by and large management is an abomination. This place will continue to be toxic until upper management and about 80% of the supervisor’s get replaced by real leaders who care about their employees. The phoniness is not noticeable the first 3 months but when you start paying attention it’s hard to miss. If there’s ever a time a customer requests a supervisor and you try to get one...crickets. Real strong leadership isn’t it? The IT and computer programs are a joke. Things freeze every other minute and the go to response from the help desk or a supervisor is ‘Clear your Cache and Cookies.’ Uh no how about you spend the money that needs to be spent to get this place running efficiently and stop saying there’s a ‘work around’ for every technical glitch that’s experienced by EVERYONE on a DAILY basis. Every time the Policy Administration System got an update it turned out having more problems than it had before the update came out...how is that possible? Oh yeah and ask 3 different supervisor’s the same question about what protocol to follow regarding insurance guidelines and you will get three different answers-take that to the bank 100% guaranteed.
