Not the worst place I've worked

Pros

Pay is above minimum decent benefits package access to pro-deals and 3point5 (better than discount)

Cons

If you are working at Cabela's for a few hours a week for the discounts or if you are at the manager level or higher it would be probably a great place to work. However the "full"-part timers, full timers and leads get the... south bound end of a north bound horse. Promotions/advancements are really hard to come by and when you are good at what you do and a promotion becomes available people (this isn't me I'm talking about) get the "We really appreciate what you do in your positions so we are going to keep you there and higher from the outside"

Pros

The in-store discount and the discounts offered through training The other outfitters I work with The pay is better than most retail businesses

Cons

When I started at my location I started with all the original managers that were hired when the store opened. There was very good communication between managers and outfitters then. They showed real appreciation for the work you put in and they even gave out rewards and had a breakfast for us. It seems as though they underpaid for all the work they do because a majority of the good managers left and were replaced by ones that don't care if they screw up your availability and don't care about the morale of outfitters. We have been understaffed since before the holidays and because of this many were overworked and burnt out. The emphasis on selling a credit card to customers is also very frustrating. When you are interviewed and on the job posting, it does not state a requirement of employment is schilling a credit card. The area our store is in sees a lot of regulars who either have the card already or have told us repeatedly they don't want it. Cabela's is placing their business model around sending our customers a monthly bill and if an outfitter can't sell enough credit cards you aren't valued as the ones who do and you are hounded daily about it. All outfitters are sick of it. It is also taking them FOREVER to post new schedules. They used to post it three weeks in advance to give outfitters plenty of time to fix issues and now they don't post it until a few days before the next week is supposed to start. It's unprofessional to expect outfitters to be responsible for our schedules yet management does not give us enough time to review our schedules before our next shift. So why stay? Despite the issues I have with management, I really like the other outfitters I work with. The minions on the floor with me feeling the same frustrations. At the end of the day this is retail and most of the problems here are issues you will have at other retail jobs.

Pros

Fellow Outfitters are good hard working outdoors minded people, pleasant work environment, decent product discounts, local store management is organized, positive and respectful of hourly employees, happy customers

Cons

Very fast paced sales environment, modest pay, mixed days off and few weekends off, store management positions are precarious.
