Pros

Some coworkers were kind and supportive • Room for growth if you fit the company mold

Cons

As a minority, my experience at this company was disheartening and often degrading. The lack of diversity was glaring, and it became clear that inclusion was not a priority. I had three different managers in just one year—each reflecting a toxic culture in their own way. My first manager frequently made uncomfortable remarks referencing my race and ethnicity. I also witnessed frequent insensitive and racist comments made about a foreign coworker’s accent—remarks that were brought up but consistently dismissed by leadership. The next manager, a white male, was passive-aggressive toward minority staff, withheld raises, and openly stated he wouldn’t assist on the line because it wasn’t “his job.” Despite poor conduct, he was promoted. My final manager made inappropriate comments about employees’ appearances and self-worth. It often felt like working in a toxic high school environment rather than a professional setting. Management lacks diversity and accountability • Racism and favoritism are real issues • Raises and recognition are not distributed fairly • Disrespectful customers and low pay This company needs serious reflection and change. If you’re a minority or value equity in the workplace, proceed with caution.

We’re sorry to hear your experience fell short of the positive experience the majority of our employees say they have at Canvas. We wish we had the opportunity to address your situation while at Canvas. Our most recent Employee Engagement Survey included overwhelmingly positive responses related to our employees feeling they are treated fairly, regardless of gender, race, or other factors. While we hire, compensate and promote people based on performance/experience/tenure, our employee population is very diverse. 60% of our employees are female while 44% of our employees are ethnicities other than white. Compensation and promotion processes are objective, transparent and overseen by HR and senior departmental leadership. We also offer many listening posts to ensure our employees have a voice. These include roundtable discussions with our CEO, employee-led "MyCanvas" Chats, People Support Advisors (HR), employee resource groups, and anonymous reporting channels for any concerns (EthicsPoint/Employee Engagement Surveys). Themes from these posts indicate a highly engaged culture where people feel empowered to serve our members. With all that said, we aren't perfect and are always looking to understand where we can grow. We'd welcome the opportunity to learn more about your complaint - you can contact us through PeopleSupportAdvisors@canvas.org or Ethicspoint.

Pros

I worked at the Head Quarters and am only speaking from my experience there. Cannot comment on Branch experience. - People and Leaders want to see their teams and employee body grow - They utilize company-wide surveys and take into account the kind of feedback that is provided on a team-by-team basis - From my experience, Leaders will provide support and resources to assist in getting you to your next career goal, inside or outside the company - They offer opportunities to pursue a Masters Degree in the state of Colorado once a year - They offer a hybrid schedule for a majority of the positions at Head Quarters - They do have a gym on-site for their employees to use - There are opportunities for growth within the company whether it is at Head Quarters or in one of the Branches - They offer 12 hours of paid Volunteer time

Cons

- Leadership communication skills could use some improvement - They have a mandatory company-wide convention on Indigenous Peoples Day/Columbus Day - They need a specialized team to revamp the training procedures and practices company-wide in order to achieve a higher level of professionalism

Thank you for your feedback; it helps our organization learn and grow. It’s refreshing to hear your perspective from working at our Home Office. We strive to provide learning and development opportunities to our CanFam and appreciate you highlighting a few of our efforts, such as the one-site gym and paid volunteer time. We respect your point of view on leadership communication. While we never strive to be perfect, we can always improve, and we hear you. Our commitment to enhanced leadership skills is demonstrated in our updated Human Side of Leadership program that rolled out this year. We also have a full Learning & Development team dedicated to creating and updating our training procedures and practices along with developing many new valuable development opportunities for our teams. We recognize the importance of continuous improvement and are committed to providing development opportunities for our employees. Regarding our offsite organization-wide event, while we recognize there can be challenges with attending, we feel the time commitment of bringing our entire workforce together is extremely valuable as part of our commitment to teamwork and culture. We encourage you to keep speaking up, and we will always take feedback constructively and look to make the appropriate improvements. Thanks again for your valuable insights!
