Nepotism runs rampant

Pros

The folks in the branches were the only reason I stayed there so long

Cons

Where to begin? Nepotism with the CEO especially is absurd and don’t understand how it’s legal, he doesn’t even try to hide the fact he hires his own family members and buddies. the CEO is some how allowed to hire his own family members but doesn’t allow it for anyone else. The hiring practices should really be investigated by the state as jobs have been created out of thin air and given to people without any due process - The executives spend lavishly on themselves with retreats and parties and spends thousands on extravagant parties for their board members. They somehow have money to spend on sponsoring all the sports but their branches look like Cold War relics and the technology in the branches is the same. They preach culture constantly but the good ole boy club is still alive and well and if you don’t make it in you’re cut off completely. - Back office is where the hypocrisy is at the most where leaders constantly talk about culture but you never even seen them in their own department. But hey, at least the office has some low grade snacks to make you feel better! -The CEO tries to portray himself off as humble and approachable but he is just like every other crooked executive out there and only cares about himself and his group. It was so much better working when it was PSCU and the members would agree. - they call us family members in some weird cult like fashion but dispose of their best employees without a hesitation - they like to trash other banks and credit unions in the area but are so hypocritical they don’t realize how petty and insecure they look

This is Ryan Brown, VP of People and Culture and I’ve been with Canvas since 2016. We always welcome feedback on how we can get better. Know that my door is always open to chat and answer any HR related questions. Please feel free to reach out at ryanb@canvas.org. Todd Marksberry became Canvas’ president & CEO seven years ago. In addition to proven operational and strategic capabilities, Todd brought with him a fierce commitment to recruiting and retaining people who share values such as empathy, authenticity, and service to others. We call our employees “family members” because we believe it helps set the tone for how we treat each other. We invite our talented friends and family to come join us on this journey, but only if they serve a business need and are willing to give their all to serve our members. We hire and promote people based on clearly defined behaviors and performance outcomes. Hiring managers partner with our internal recruiting team to identify behaviors which are most likely to lead to success. We then build job-specific and behavior-based questions around DDI’s Targeted Selection process. Internal applicants undergo an even more extensive vetting process which includes demonstrated success at Canvas and leadership references. All job postings are posted internally for a minimum of three days. Each year, we proudly promote one in four people at Canvas (185 of 700 in 2021)! Our rebrand from PSCU to Canvas was the start of a new chapter for our credit union. We invest in what our members and family members tell us matter most. These include people, technology, and facilities. We’ve since completed 13 remodels and have 7 currently under construction. For our branches which have not been remodeled, our Canvas Consultants stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our members too. Lastly, it’s true that Canvas knows how to party. Whether it’s our Christmas parties, our upcoming Great Place to Work parties, or the many other opportunities for us to fellowship, innovate, and plan for how we can get better, spending time with one another has proven instrumental to building our unique culture. There is a strong business case in investing in these gatherings, especially coming out of global pandemic. A people-first culture cannot be nurtured via Zoom. We realize Canvas is not for everyone, and we know that people with a desire to grow, care for others, and an openness to be vulnerable is what makes Canvas a certified Great Place to Work. As Todd says to our new hires: “If you don’t like people, if you don’t like being around people, and caring for people, you probably are not going to like it here.” Our growth and member and employee surveys have proven that this approach works.

Pros

The company has mostly good intentions. A new COO has started and she seems passionate about making much needed changes (have to see them though). Love that you can wear Canvas T-shirts to work, have colored hair, and just be yourself. Wonderful teams in the branches rush truly become your family.

Cons

Pay is not even close to good enough for Colorado living. Pay for branch employees is not comparable to the work load given. It’s way too low. No consequences for members that are verbally abusive to team members (although they say there is). Members can treat employees any way they want and get away with it. Branch teams continue to get more and more piled on them with no extra benefits. Branches are extremely short staffed and upper management does not do a good job helping with this. They sell how great their incentive is, however they have made it extremely difficult to get it. Branch teams work extremely hard serving members and hitting goals, but one upset member out of 20 can take the entire teams hard earned incentive for the month. If incentive isn’t easier to get (it’s deserves), hourly pay has to be more. There was never any real appreciation shown to branches for working our tails off during covid. They just keep giving our more swag and pizza parties.

Thank you for your thorough review and observations. Feedback like this helps us get stronger and pay attention to salient themes. We regularly evaluate pay by position, and this is work we’re actively engaged in now. In reviewing compensation, we are also looking at our incentive plan, and much of this is based on feedback from our family members. While we’re considering making large scale compensation changes, it’s important to note this is something we don’t take lightly – our intent is to take a thoughtful approach, requesting feedback and resisting the temptation to merely rush it through. With regard to member behavior, we hope family members remember our People Support team as well as the Ethics hotline as avenues through which one can report different types of situations. While being short staffed is never ideal, it’s important to realize that much of the labor market today is understaffed, and our Talent team is working hard to fill open positions in this drastically changed labor landscape. To our current family members – we are committed to not only filling positions but hiring the best fit for Canvas which means identifying those truly committed to serving our members. Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you the best in your future endeavors. Canvas Talent Team

Pros

The company pays well and the members are great. The training is great as well of you get the time to go.

Cons

They are a very sales pushy company and the management says they are not. They have unrealistic goals for tellers and bankers.
